WP: The GOP Takes Hostages
Richard Cohen

Where’s the pride?

I ask that of every Republican who in recent days has done the bidding of the McCain campaign and lied about what Barack Obama said regarding that now famous pig and lipstick. First off the mark was former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift who, in a conference call arranged by the McCain campaign, called the remark “disgraceful” and demanded an “apology.” Swift’s compliance was so, well, swift and mindless that at first I thought this was a hostage situation -- one of those episodes in which some poor soul is forced to issue a statement at gunpoint. Someone ought to check Swift’s house.

But then, very quickly, came responses from other Republican women. Reps. Marsha Blackburn and Candice Miller apparently were also taken hostage and issued statements that had to be -- one would hope -- their personal bests in voter contempt. They attacked Obama for being a sexist lout regarding the fair Sarah, never noticing that they themselves were being exploited for their sex and that they were, in the process, surrendering all rights, now and in the future, to advise children, grandchildren and orphans everywhere to always tell the truth -- and, if I may return to where I began, to conduct yourself with pride.

As for John McCain himself, it is now clear he would rather be president than proud. If he keeps this up, he should be neither.
