My Fundie neighbor has put up a McSame sign in retaliation to my Obama sign
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 09:44 AM by YOY
Delightful people. The woman met my (non-American) wife 2 years ago (both just having their first child then) and started constantly inviting her to the fundie church. My wife always politely refused. A few weeks after they met she said she would call my wife to just hang out...never did. I had to explain American Fundies to my wife. She didn't argue. My descriptor fit the bill. She even quipped in that the woman's intelligence seemed stunted and she seemed uncomfortable talking to someone with an accent.

After that they never even say "hello" to us. We talk to all our neighbors. A rarity in the DC area. We have a community...a really cool diverse community. These people never socialize with anyone but their church (shock of shocks I know...)

I do not wear my political beliefs on my sleeve (save my lawn sign and Obama button as of recently.) I have no intention of damaging their property but I am aching to put up a well written sign in my own lawn with an arrow pointing to their sign (small lawns...)

Any ideas as to what it should say DUers?

7. We share a (really crappy) wire fence.
They rent. We own...just bought actually...rented before. I'm not damaging anyone's property especially the landlord who seems like a sweet old guy.

6. Put up a sign that has both McCain and Bush's name on it
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 09:48 AM by Bubbha Jo
Link the two names. Here's some on Cafe Press. Get some white cardboard and magic markers and copy one:

10. on the other hand, we have GENUINELY sweet neighbors with a McCain sign
across from our Obama sign, and these are the best neighbors, ever. They watched our son while my wife drove to the scene where I was in a serious auto accident, they've helped us without question and never brought up politics or religion. Last election, we had kerry and they had bush and it never caused a problem.

Just wanted to point that just because our neighbor is politically mistaken, doesn't automatically make them evil people.

Well aware that the opposition has some sane voices...they are just easily drown out by screaming nationalists, rabid fundies, and war porn lovers. McSame seems to be catering more to them than the sane ones.

18. I don't think I would do anything to antagonize. They know where you live, after all
And having known zealot fundies, they wouldn't let something small like their religion get in the way of keying your car, slashing your tires, or whatever.

35. because that will change their minds about who they vote for?
You put up a sign expressing who you support.
They put up a sign expressing who they support.

People driving or walking by will see the signs and know that there is Obama supporter in your house and a McCain supporter in their house.

Why do you need to do anything else? Would you be doing anything else if they hadn't put up their sign? Doing something in "retaliation" for their putting up a political sign seems pretty non-progressive to me.

you don't want a Hatfield-McCoy situation in that sanctuary from the world you call home! If you want to make a joke out of the whole thing, procure a life-size Barack cut-out and put it on your lawn. Now that would be funny! (But where would you find one).

Seriously, election day will come and go.... better to keep peace at home.

30. That sucks
I'd figure having a sign for those assholes in your neighborhood would lower property values. haha

I actually saw my very first McCain yard sign *ever* the other day. Funny considering I live in a county that will probably go around 60-percent for McCain. It's on a house across the street from one that has had an Obama sign for several months, so the person who put it up may have done so for the same reason that your neighbor did.

I have an Obama sign, but it's kinda worthless since live in the back building of an apartment complex that faces a fence, so only the handful of people driving around the back will ever see it!

37. Laugh and say you have "dueling yard signs" & that you plan to make it a tradition...
Something like that. Our next door neighbor and I have dueling yard signs every 4 years -- sheriff, president, congressional rep -- we really are not on the same political wavelength.

And yet.... he's out there right now rebuilding the termite-eaten fence between our houses and redoing our gate for good measure. We're paying for materials, and he's doing the considerable labor.

Sorry about your neighbor. She sounds like a frightened little thing; don't do anything to increase any sense of martyrdom she may already feel due to her insular church teachings. Your sign next to hers says everything you need to say.

Hekate

Part of me honestly truly worries that they will either steal it or the American people really will reveal themselves as so incredibly stupid that it goes beyond words... My imagination takes care of the rest of what would happen if McCain wins...it's not pretty.

Sorry for the hand wringing. I'd be inhuman if I didn't have doubts and worries.

Keep fighting the good fight. You're a far more eloquent person than I.

45. Right.
We all do have doubts and worries. We'd be foolish not to, considering all of the evidence that has accumulated in the past 40 years .... especially the past 8. We are in a very tough battle, and there is no doubt about that.

Recently, in the largest daily paper in this region of the state, a person who identifies himself as being retired from military intelligence wrote a vicious personal attack in an op-ed, calling Obama some ugly names. Believe me, I am tempted to respond harshly. But, I know that is not the way. So I will respond in a polite way, and destroy his op-ed in the nicest way possible.

It's very hard sometimes. Yet, when it is hard, it is also the most important.

Glad to be on the same team as you.

43. I put up Obama sign my neighbors Hillary sign
mine stayed up theirs came down. It was empty lawn for all summer then a few days ago obama/biden was put up.

I don't talk to these neighbors much, didn't even know they were dems until the Hillary sign as they seem very conservative and are in late 60's.

If I could talk to them I would say thank you for the unity.
