Former GOP Senator Lincoln Chafee Refers to Sarah Palin as a "Cocky Whacko"

http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/2008/09/chafee_said_wha/

On the front page of Roll Call's "Heard on the Hill" column, Emily Heil and Elizabeth Brotherton write:

He Said What? Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee is know for being a friendly, mild-mannered guy. But the Republican-turned-Independent's good nature isn't because he lacks the tough-talk ammo, as he proved Tuesday while promoting his latest book, "Against the Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President," at the New America Foundation.
Chafee (a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama) was discussing how GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech at the recent Republican National Convention energized the party's base. While he said it was impressive, Chafee thinks the Alaska governor also energized the left, as Democrats were outraged "to see this cocky whacko up there."

Chafee's comment drew gasps from the audience, who apparently were not expecting to hear such relatively feisty language from the normally genteel former Senator. It even shocked event moderator Steve Clemons, who responded, "Did you just say 'cocky whacko'?"

Chafee just smiled.

Chafee should have just switched parties to Dem. How many Dems did we watch switch to repuke as soon as they were elected? Well his replacement is a true firebrand...

26. There are reasons many of us "homeless" ex- Republicans have opted for an "I"
rather than a "D".

I have many issues with the Democrats (which I don't raise here because here is not the place to raise them, and in particular now, when this country stands at the brink between progress and disaster, is not the time to raise them).

I of course have far more issues with the GOP these days (America's first "successful" fascist party, though it was not always like this). I also have issues with having one and only one party loyal to American principles -- lets face it, the Dems sometimes nominate candidates so awful that the only argument for voting for them is that the Republican candidate is even scarier. Until we have two sound parties, rather than a sound one and a batshit crazy one, and real races between two sound candidates, we can hardly say we have a healthy and vibrant democracy.

This country will some day need a valid second party (valid as in "follows the Constitution" rather than wipes its behind with it), and I'm sure among its founders and early members will be many ex- Republicans who are, right now, independents. I dream of the day when a knowledgeable and conscientious voter will again have a tough time deciding between candidates, and will again find themselves in the privacy of the ballot booth splitting their vote between the party they belong to, and the best of the opposition.

13. That about sums it up
Old-line Republicans, at least the ones who haven't drunk the Kool-Aid, must be as livid as we are.

Republicans, at least of Chaffee's generation, used to be decent people, even if you disagreed with their ideas.

18. Chafee is a good guy...the last of the moderate Republicans
They were all pushed out by Bush, he lost because he was in a blue state and people wanted Rethugs out. Rethugs will always be here but it would be nice if more were like Chafee and were not led around the nose by Shrub, McBush, and co.

He is one of the good ones and I was sorry to see him lose his job. I'm sure he's doing fine, and I would rather have a Dem in to represent all issues but still, he seems like a genuinely good soul.
