WTF Alert: Bill O'Reilly Defends Obama, Slams Smears
From Huffington Post:

Bill O'Reilly led off tonight's episode of The Factor with a pointed critique of the latest small-minded content of the news cycle, criticizing the McCain campaign both in terms of character and tactics, slagging the media for pressing the story senselessly, and largely absolving Obama - though perhaps with faint praise: his "Obama doesn't like confrontation" statement seems out of joint with last week's insistence that the Illinois Senator was "tough" and "not a wimp."

Nevertheless, O'Reilly very clearly stipulated that there was no evidence that Obama intended to make any sort of sexist remark. /snip

1. When people meet him face to face person to person, they see the real deal
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 01:35 AM by Boz
Even people that are adversaries have a hard time after talking to him, because they realize he is that educated a thinker and that sincere in what he is doing.

Its very hard not to respect him once you meet him even as an enemy.

28. I have noticed that too...
throughout the campaign and he doesn't feed into the garbage he explains where he is coming and Billo didn't know how to react to it...

3. The 1 in 10,000 times that Bill-O sides against the repub dogma, is just a show so that
he can keep up the thin lie that he is "fair and..." well, you know.

4. Maybe Barack made a friend by showing up on his show.
Furthermore, charges of sexism might sit about as well with conservatives like Billo as charges of being a negligent mother sit with people here.

has a hatred for Obama and Democrats.

19. My wife and I have talked about this for some time.
There are some people who have an enormous effect on people when you are in their presence and Barack is that kind of person. You can talk all the shit you want from a distance, but when you finally meet the guy, everything changes.

We all know individuals like that. Kind of larger than life. The day Obama that was on Fox News the entire network was acting a little strange.

21. I can't tell if O'Reilly is just hedging
his bets or if he thinks Obama is going to win. For eight years O'Reilly et. al have had pretty much straight access to/ been a mouthpiece for the right wing. I mean KKKarl is a Fox "analyst." Assuming that Obama wins, then O'Reilly has to figure out what happens to him and his show after that. Access is pretty much gone for that whole network ( God, that's a relief). So who is he now. He can't be a blatant right-wing asshole - that slot is already taken by Hannity. He can't be the "unbiased" presenter of news. That is Hume's gig ( I think - I'm not sure). His shtick and the psuedo-persona he cultivates is the populist, common sense "independent."

This just helps him develop his credentials for the next eight years. He interviewed Obama and "stood up for him." He called McCain on this kind of stuff. He must be an independent. Hence when Obama is in, he gets to call Obama out on everything because he also called out McCain and blah blah blah. He is just working on his image. That is not to say that he does or does not believe what he is saying.

He has been trying to figure this out for awhile now; hence all the inane cultural segments.

33. My guess is
I'm guessing that a lot of the media whores took care of Bush & Co., because they knew they would be taken care of in return.

And they all played footsie with the nutcase religious right.

However, they're beginning to realize that Palin and her pals are loose cannons and that the rules of the game will change -- and probably not for the better.

They fucked around with the nutcases before, when it suited their purposes, but this time the monster is about to get out of the lab.

39. Obama treated O'Reilly with respect
I saw part of the interview. Obama treated O'Reilly as an intelligent person who could understand the issues. O'Reilly said they'd been talking backstage about how they both came from humble origins and had worked their way up, and it sounded as if they'd found a certain amount of common ground before the interview.

They disagreed on tax policies, of course, and O'Reilly accused Obama of class warfare and favoring income redistribution -- but it was a lot like political arguments used to be in the old days, when Republicans and Democrats could agree on what was best for the country while having different ideas on how to get there. There was none of the kind of hysterical name-calling you see from the McCain campaign.

O'Reilly may be a loudmouth and a bully -- but he's a long way from the Karl Rove school of dirt-slinging and mindlessly demonizing your opponents. And Obama treated him with the same respect and close attention that he treats every 9-month-old baby -- and it showed.
