Obama Can't Win
Against Palin
By KARL ROVE
September 11, 2008; Page A13

Of all the advantages Gov. Sarah Palin has brought to the GOP ticket, the most important may be that she has gotten into Barack Obama's head. How else to explain Sen. Obama's decision to go one-on-one against "Sarah Barracuda," captain of the Wasilla High state basketball champs?

It's a matchup he'll lose. If Mr. Obama wants to win, he needs to remember he's running against John McCain for president, not Mrs. Palin for vice president.

Michael Dukakis spent the last months of the 1988 campaign calling his opponent's running mate, Dan Quayle, a risky choice and even ran a TV ad blasting Mr. Quayle. The Bush/Quayle ticket carried 40 states.

Adlai Stevenson spent the fall of 1952 bashing Dwight Eisenhower's running mate, Richard Nixon, calling him "the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, and then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation." The Republican ticket carried 39 of 48 states.

If Mr. Obama keeps attacking Mrs. Palin, he could suffer the fate of his Democratic predecessors. These assaults highlight his own tissue-thin résumé, waste precious time better spent reassuring voters he is up for the job, and diminish him -- not her...

7. Is John McCain just part of Palin's entourage now? Has he been reduced
to her butler or something? Maybe Democrats ought to start slamming McLame for basically giving up the driver's seat on his own ticket? He must not have been Presidential material after all.

8. Joe Biden needs to be doing the hacking.
Unfortunately, he decided he doesn't like doing his job as running mate.

I dunno, but I don't think the Obama campaign has figured out how to deal with Palin yet. I'm worried they never will.

12. His first instinct was right. Ignore her, focus on McCain.
...and that's what he has been doing MOSTLY. Whenever he brings her up, its only in reference to them as a group and their false claim of being for change.

He's doing the right thing, staying with the issues and attack McCain on the facts.

Seems everything Rupert Murdoch touches turns to shit these days. I hope that stupid P.O.S. is taking a huge loss on myspace and its lack of profitability. WSJ will soon follow.

14. I've never seen a ticket like this, where the VP is held out as the main draw.
Has it ever happened in the last 100 years? Seems to me it would doom the ticket as dysfunctional, but the media is weirdly celebrating it.

It's very nice of Karl Rove to give Barack Obama advice on how to win the presidency.

Of course the point of this piece isn't to give Obama advice - it's an attempt to cement the meme that Obama is attacking Palin, even though Obama is actually barely talking about Palin at all, and is trying to stay focused on the issues. As we all know, if the election is about the issues, the Republicans have nothing.

Rove and Co. are quite simply trying to pare this election down to "Black Man Attacks White Woman." That's all there is to it.

22. Sounds about right. Gender, race AND culture wars all in two weeks,
the ultimate tossing of sand in Obama's eyes just when the country starts to finally pay attention to this election and its issues. Rove, McCain and the GOP have nothing but cynicism and contempt for the American people and our politics--they're proving it every day.

Rove to drone's original sentence!

didn't he endorse hillary's campaign?

And no, I'm not trying to antagonize hillary supporters, just pointing out that this game didn't work before, why does he think it will work now?

And even if he was running against Palin, a Harvard educated lawyer trumps a moosehunter who went to a bunch colleges to get one degree that hardly got her anywhere.

21. The trick to Rove
is to bash him in his big melon when the chance presents it's self and to utterly ignore his "advice" one way or the other.

He's no genius, he's a punk ass bully that gets away with murder on rep.

Senator Obama, what do you think of Karl Roves latest take on the campaign? "Hmm...I think I'm about to need to need a new plate for my car and I was wondering when he was going to get on that?".

Rove is a distraction. The entire Republican party is a shell game.

Bring them down!

28. Well there it is. Palin is an empty Rove plant...how one man is allowed to play such childish games
with the future of America must be structured into a course study in psychiatric narcissism. It's simply not enough to say, as I am sure Rove maintains, "Because I am paid princely sums what I do has been validated."

but until you admit that he is psychotic, you're stuck with her as VP.

Good luck with that - Oh, and how are the piercing nightmares going? You little man....You'll never be normal, karl. Never. You are one screwed up individual.

of the ticket and made Gramps look feeble.

Rove knows the game is up and Barak is
going after Palin because she is the
the ringer they want to replace Bush.

37. Well then aren't we all lucky as hens that he's not running against her!
Which is what of all this "Pig in Lipstick" foolishness is about. If the McCain campaign can convince folks that Obama is going after Palin, even if they have to stretch so far to do it that they look like performers in Cirque du Soleil, they're all too happy to try.

Obama's barely said five words to or about that woman since she hit the scene. She probably feels secretly slighted and more than a little bit dissed....
