The American Electorate as Battered Housewife:

It's the abused housewife syndrome. Sure, the Republicans have led the charge into a never-ending war, managed to rack up record deficits, stalled alternative energy research, and given tax breaks to the obscenely wealthy, but they love us and will never do anything bad to hurt us again. They promise. And this time, they mean it (they swear).

And if anyone asks, the economy fell down the stairs.

5. It's an old saying that describes past southern politics.
It's how many southern politicians got people to vote against their own interests. You just make the other person look a lot worst. Unfortunately it's now the Republicans' "southern" strategy for winning national elections.
