Geraldine Ferraro
In 1984, Walter Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro to be his Vice Presidential candidate for the upcoming election. In doing so she became the first woman VP nominee and only Italian American to be a major-party national nominee.

After the Democratic convention the Mondale/Ferraro team was leading in the national polls by 18 points. They were confident of winning California and the election in general. And then came November 6, 1984. They were defeated in an electoral landslide by incumbent President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H. W. Bush. Reagan won 49 states, Mondale barely carried his home state of Minnesota.

Is there a message here? Yes!

* It's still a long road to travel between now and November 4. Remember Mondale's polling? Forget current polls.

* Might we win Arizona and carry 50, not 49 states like Reagan.

* Palin's mystique will, like Ferraro's, wane once she's vetted.

* Biden is by far a superior VP candidate compared to both Ferraro and Palin.

* The big poll in the sky will be before midnight on the 4th of November...Obama/Biden will win in a landslide. Patience.

Patience people, patience. Besides, I'm bored with "lipstick." Had to go off on a tangent.

But it's always good to see it again. Thanks for posting!

3. If I remember correctly, Ferraro's husband was a crook.
This caused her downfall.

That poll was most likely an outlier but that is amazing...

9. I think that was an outlier
Most of the other polls had Mondale ahead of Reagan very narrowly after the convention and some polls also showed him pulling even after the first debate.

10. As Someone Who Lived That Campaign
The only time Mondale appeared to have a chance was when Reagan got lost on the Ventura Highway during the first debate...

12. I was 50 during election, knew that it was going to be a landslide.
Seems like yesterday...

I, like McCain, tend to lapse into senior moments.

17. True...other polls did have Mondale leading...narrowly.
Point being, don't worry about current polls.

5. Heh, I don't think we will win as big as you are saying state wise... but I think we WILL win...
Obama is still easily carrying the Kerry states and still has the upperhand in battleground state polls. He only needs 1 or 2, good sized states with a good number of delegates and I think he will win that PLUS some small states like Iowa.

If he can put on some excellent debate performance and given he isn't found in the bed with a dead woman or a live man, he has it in the bag.

15. Actually I have Obama winning 302 to 256...electoral votes.
Difficult to imagine McCain having an excellent debate performance...unless Lieberman and/or Palin is by his side. Or, assistance from the moderator.

And, a live woman would be a worse case scenario than a dead one. Live man? Might help with the GL vote.

Excuse my nonsense, "lipstick" and Palin is making me daffy.

19. Yea this is pretty close to my guesses.
I'm hoping and praying he turns Ohio though. It was very close here last time, and I know that at least here in Columbus, Obama is highly popular. He will take my city at least for sure.

21. I Don't Want To Be A Cassandra
I'll stick with my 273 figure and pray it happens...

Of course, the challenge is to hold the Kerry voters and improve on it...I haven't broken it down demographically for awhile but he needs to be at 90% among African Americans , 60% among Latinos, and 40% among everybody else...

18. I don't think there are many GL folk voting for McCain. None that are friends of mine are...
Its just an expression I use.

I get where are getting the 302 number, but I think some of those states he is ahead in now will probably tighten up and go for the Republican when all is said and done. But hey, if we can get em I'll take em.

14. Vote machine.
The vote machine were made by Westinghouse. They also were going to make the MX missile.I live in Illinois and after the election they had a run off between
to people in Chicago IL.The guy who won said their was no way he could have beat the other guy. So they checked the vote machine, out every 3 Dem votes one would go for the GOP.Now don't think I.m a nut.I read this in one of the Chicago New papers,One of the thing that was asked was where did the voting machine come from and they said from the election between Mondale and Reagan. It was one of the big Chicago paper, might have been the Sun Times.I.m sure if someone had the time they could fine the story about it.I never forgot about this. Sorry abut my writing I'm not very good at it.

She is an embarrassment to democrats and progressives--much the same way as Joe Lieberman is.
