Palin quoted writer who wanted FDR and Bobby Kennedy dead!

It’s been spotted that Palin’s speechwriters quoted a notorious right-wing journalist in her convention address. She said: “A writer observed: ‘We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty, sincerity, and dignity.’”

The writer was Westbrook Pegler who once regretted that an assassin had missed Franklin Roosevelt when he was on a trip to Miami in 1933 and killed the mayor of Chicago instead. More details here:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/palin_quoted_writer_who_once_l.php

But in fact more than 30 years later Pegler said something similar about Robert Kennedy before his assassination. Thurston Clarke reported in his article in the May edition of Vanity Fair that Westbrook Pegler “welcomed the possibility that, as he put it, ‘some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies,…”

This is a reminder, perhaps, that the extolling of small-town virtues often goes hand in hand with the kind of right-wing populism mentioned in the previous post and indeed with right-wing extremism.

2. Wow. The incompetence is astounding... or,
they think we've all had enough Kool-aid that no one pays attention any more.

I mean, the whole Walter Reed Middle School thing and now this?

Unbelievable....

5. Will any "news" person ask about this? Just a rhetorical question - we know the answer.

7. Some speech writer might have just googled quotes about small towns and never
checked into the background of this one.

Or, she really read this guy's stuff and likes it. (Shades of Coulter and McCarthy??)

8. The buck stops with her (or it is supposed to)
Palin was ultimately in charge of the message that her people put out. That is why on every campaign ad the candidate has to say, "I'm so-in-so and I approve this ad".

9. This needs to get out -- email it to all media sources. Off topic, the name Thurston always reminds
me of Thurston Howell -- awesome folks, the Howells! Love what they brought along just for a three hour tour...
