1. I agree!
That's why this election is so very, very important.

Not only are we talking about the abortion issue here, but the very subject grays the line between separation of church and state.

Once Roe v Wade is overturned, what next?

6. You are wrong. This is a referendum on Roe and the Supreme Court
Read Tobin's book The Nine

The federalist society judges, thomas, scalia, alito, and roberts have that as their top agenda

There will be up to 3 judges who supported roe resigning in the next 4 years

For mccain's entire carreer he has been against roe. He has said he will appoint judges to overturn it

Which part don't you understand?

15. you are dead on right. If they win, this will be their best and closest
opportunity to put in at least 2 conservative Justices.

That would set us women back at LEAST fifty years................

20. If nothing else is done by the next president, the one thing you can bank on is
new justices in the Supreme Court

3. No it won't.
Even if it were, the majority is pro-choice. It's here to stay, with or without RvW.

5. The majority of what?
The Supreme Court? South Dakota? Guess again. If RvW is overturned, there are many states which will ban abortion, much to their majority's glee. I live in NY, so it's no big deal here, but I still care what happens to people in other states.

if mccain wins, and to think otherwise is a delusion

9. Yes.
Notice how the McCain campaign is deliberately trying to avaid talking about this issue?

Obama should do everything possible to make sure that every woman in America who might be thinking about voting for McCain because of Palin is made aware of this.

10. How would that happen exactly?
There are many reason to make sure McCain doesn't win, however it is sad how few understand how how our govt works.

McCain can't confirm anyone to the bench. He can submit an appointee to the SENATE.
The Senate by vote of 60 (not just 51) or more needs to CONFIRM the appointee.

Dems are GOING to pick up AT LEAST 4 seats in senate (maybe more if it is a blow out).
So Senate will be 55 to 45. Since it takes 60 votes to confirm..........

All 45 Republicans would have to vote for the appointee.
Some may not like the appointees position on other issues.
8 of GOP senators are PRO-CHOICE so they would have to vote against their own beliefs.

Even so 45 is not enough votes. 15 democratic senators would need to break ranks from Reid and support "the enemy" on a position against what their voters want.

So why exactly would 23+ pro-choice senators (both rep & dems) vote FOR an anti-choice appointee?

59 votes for- appointee dies and senate asks McCain for new name.

Leave the fear mongering for the Repubes.

16. What don't they see?
1. mccain has said throughout his entire career that he believes roe v wade should be overturned
2. mccain has said he will choose judges with the philosophy of thomas and scalia
3. there are three judges who most likely will leave the court in the next four years

Which part don't they understand?

19. Why would they kill their prize pig?
This issue gets their voters motivated. The GOP has been in charge of everything for the past 8 years... if they really wanted this overturned, they would have done it by now. This issue dies on the vine and is revived every four years.

After the last 8 years, you don't believe they will appoint federalist society judges to overturn Roe, I have some swamp land to sell you in Arizona

In 2000 bush said that he would appoint judges to overturn roe, and guess what, HE DID

17. No it wont
The GOP has been in charge of everything for eight years. If they were going to do it, they would have already done it.

This is a prime, heart-string pulling issue with them. This gets out the vote for them. They would never kill their prize pig... lipstick or not! (snort)

21. so tell me, when mccain says he wants roe v wade overturned
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 04:24 PM by still_one
and he has said that for his entire career

when mccain says he will appoint judges like scalia and thomas

when their will most likely be three justices leaving in the next 4 years

what in your infinite wisdom makes you believe that he will appoint judges like ginsberg instead of thomas?

If someone campaigns on an issue, his record demonstrates time and again his position on that issues, and the republican platform says that is their objective,

why don't you believe them?

24. Where have you been for the past 30 years?
They trot this pig out every four years and beat it to death. It's a "heart-strings" issue they can't afford to lose. I never said squat about judges... of course he would appoint RW judges! No brainer! That doesn't mean they will actually go through with getting rid of Roe v Wade!

How many times has this been used as a campaign issue in your lifetime, and how many times has it been overthrown. The answers are: Every four years, and NEVER!

30. If the last 8 years are any indication of the next, I have no doubt they will cave in
and it won't matter if we have the majority or not

They will have the press label them as obstructionists, and how they won't approve qualified judges, which technically they will be as qualified as roberts

It will happen if we lose the white house
