Tweety - "This picture is appealing to 'traditional Americans" - McCain & Palin
Chris Matthews digs himself another hole:

"Do you think what is appealing here? I'll be careful here. This is not about sexual relations... Everybody watching this. This is not what I am talking about. When you see the picture together of John McCain, who is an older man, but he is a kind of Audie Murphy hero image and this obviously attractive woman much younger than him, it's like they are offering themselves up as a kind of a political couple, almost like Clinton and Mrs. Clinton, Senator ... President and Senator Clinton. They are offering themselves. It's a fascinating tableau. They're hugging and even Elizabeth Bumiller on the front page of the Times today. When have we ever had running mates hug? I mean obviously they are different genders. But what I find here, is that, it is a fascinating, are they offering themselves up to run as an alternative to Barack and Michelle Obama to go to the White House? I am telling you. Politically speaking. This picture is appealing to traditional Americans. They go, yeah, that’s a nice traditional formal, we’ve seen that picture before."

This alternative to Barack Obama and Michelle Obama makes an appealing picture "to traditional Americans"? Matthews must have used up half a Chapstick after blowing the dog-whistle that hard.

African Americans vs. Real Americans. If only this had been a commentary critiquing the McCain campaign team for creating images that seek to transform this watershed year into a frakkin' homecoming election with hints of after-the-dance couplings. But, no. Instead, we got another of his patented stoner-style, stream-of-consciousness, pop-psychology, pop-philosophy rambles that revealed rather too much of an ugly thought process. And this was Matthews being careful.

But I get what you're trying to say.

3. I think he's right.
"Traditionally" Americans have been very racist so they probably do appeal to "traditional" Americans.

5. Anyone have the number for Chris Matthews? Email?
I'm sick and tired of Tweety and his racially-coded language: "regular people," "real Americans," "traditional Americans," etc.

I am so sick and tired of this. We need to take action against these people!!!

6. WTH! I LOVE Audie Murphy! MOST-decorated WWII American who also was MOVIE-STAR handsome!
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 01:20 PM by WinkyDink
John McCain is NO AUDIE MURPHY!!!

And the same-age and vastly-accomplished CLINTONS are no similarity to McC/P!!

Matthews is a man seriously deluded about his own intelligence, wit, perspicacity, charm, and powers of observation.

14.  Yeah, didn't Audie Murphy risk HIS OWN life by climbing onto an enemy tank
and dropping a grenade into it?

Or was that just the movie version?

Anyway, Audie Murphy showed physical courage in going after the enemy.

Did McCain?

22. Audie won the Medal of Honor by climbing on a burning
American tank and firing its machine gun at attacking Germans. He was a genuine hero. The movie he starred in about his WWII exploits was mainly the true story.

23. Thanks for clearing that up.
My memory is more than imperfect these days.

But I do remember that movie and Murphy climbing up on a tank from my distant and receding childhood Saturdays at the Pines Theater.

15. While you're writing Tweety
Will somebody please tell him that McCain was not a fighter pilot?

He was a bomber pilot, not a fighter pilot.

BIG difference.

Thanks.

America remains in denial to the extent of our crimes in Southeast Asia.

According to the researchers, the overall rate of mortality in Iraq since March 2003 is 13.3 deaths per 1,000 persons per year compared to 5.5 deaths per 1,000 persons per year prior to March 2003. This amounts to about 2.5 percent of Iraqi’s population having died as a consequence of the war. To put the 654,000 deaths in context with other conflicts, the authors note that during the Vietnam War an estimated 3 million civilians died overall; the Congo conflict was responsible for 3.8 million deaths; and recent estimates are that 200,000 have died in Darfur over the past 31 months.

19. See them on the street together and you think it's a woman taking Grandpa out for a walk
You know these days poor ol' Gramps can't go out alone--last time he got lost in the parking lot and started calling poor officer Wong who tried to help him a Viet Cong Gook.

It's embarrassing.

Obama and Michelle have shown to have broad appeal among all groups: blacks, Hispanics, White, etc. He is being simple minded with this one.
