McCain talking about Hillary's Health Care plan - The Pig Comment in context
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxfEHt9hfHQ

Via Media Matters:

In a September 9 post on The Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire blog, reporter Amy Chozick baselessly asserted that Sen. Barack Obama's statement that "ou can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig" "played on Palin's joke during the Republican National Convention that the only difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom was lipstick." Chozick provided no evidence for this assertion, and, in fact, Obama did not mention Palin in at least the 65 words preceding his "lipstick on a pig" comment. Indeed, his preceding comments consisted of what he described as a "list" of Sen. John McCain's policies that Obama said were no different from President Bush's. Moreover, the expression Obama used is common in political rhetoric. As Chozick herself noted in an "update" to her post, McCain reportedly used the same "common expression" in reference to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's health-care proposal. Obama has also reportedly used it in the past.

Linking to a separate report on Obama's comments, conservative Internet gossip Matt Drudge placed the words "OBAMA: 'LIPSTICK ON A PIG, STILL A PIG' " under a picture of Palin.

A video clip posted on YouTube contains part of Obama's comments leading up to the "lipstick on a pig" expression:

OBAMA: Let's just list this for a second. John McCain says he's about change, too. Except -- and so I guess his whole angle is, "Watch out, George Bush, except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy, and Karl Rove-style politics. We're really gonna shake things up in Washington." That's not change. That's just calling some -- the same thing, something different. But you know, you can -- you know, you can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig.

The McCain camp has jumped on the baseless 'sexism' charge, but perhaps they all need a lesson on the internetts, and a reminder about a little tool called YouTube. In October of 2007 while in DesMoines, Iowa, McCain spoke of Hillary Clinton's health care plan:

"My friends, we are approaching a 'perfect storm' of problems that, if not addressed by the next president, will cause our health-care system to implode," McCain said in using a Teleprompter to deliver his proposal.

"I believe Americans want to be part of a system that offers high quality care, that respects their individual dignity and is available at reasonable cost," the Arizona senator said. "Unfortunately, the American health care system as it is currently structured fails this test."

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

And if that's not enough to shut the McCainbots up, maybe refreshing their memory with McCain and his supporters discussing 'How do we beat the bitch?'

1. FrenchieCat,
I don't have cable. Who's talking this up? The teevee talking heads hoping for a cat fight or McCain's people/surrogates?

13. Here's my letter to them....well my second letter
Dear Sir/Madam:

I forgot to mention in my last email that if you continue with such "National Enquirer" type reporting you are going to lose your readers. I have stopped buying your paper - I got this information from the web. But I am sure that when people find out the truth about your comments about Obama and combine them with other lies you have told you will lose more readership.

You are either a newspaper or a gossip rag. You are turning very quickly into a gossip rag.

Sincerely,

23. My LOCAL news had a short blurb on this.
Didn't explain the context, just stated that McCain was demanding an apology for the remark. It's not even safe to turn on the boob tube to get the local weather forecast without having McCain BS lobbed at you.

Would love to talk more about issues and policy than lipsticks and pigs.

Good gawd, McCain camp. Victim-card, much?

9. This is a side-track issue, but it's really backfiring on McCain...

As noted in a post below, Halperin called the McCain camp for whining and said the media should not waste a minute on the issue they were trying to raise.

Olbermann also noted that McCain had used that same expression when arguing against Hillary's healthcare program during the primaries.

There seems to have been an overall cooling of the Palin Effect in the media. There were multiple references to Palin "continuing to tell the lie" that she shot down the Bridge to Nowhere when she was first for it, then said to the feds "No thanks for the bridge but thanks for the money." I think they're starting to get annoyed that she won't talk to them. They're beginning to ratchet up the pressure for press interviews and the criticism for her hiding, even some of the more right wing folks.

Cool. 'bout time. Everyone on the ticket has to get put in the ol' "Vet N Sweat" bag, no exceptions.

15. Excellent. Obama and Biden should use the "liptick on a pig" every chance they get, but
they always should lead up to it by describing McCain's use of the phrase. If McCain continues to complain they can point out his senility.

18. We need to confront this garbage or it's going to snowball.
Just as the love fest for Ms. Mooseburger begins to wane, they try to get sympathy for her by emphasizing this comment. Any Democrat who can get on screen needs to call bullshit. I knew there was a McCain quote out there somewhere.

21. For whatever it's worth, I emailed the quote of McCain saying
essentially the same thing to CNN and MSNBC. I'm sure they'll get right on it.:sarcasm:

Chicago Tribune reported on October 12, 2007:

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

22. "HOW DO WE BEAT THE BITCH?" (chuckle, snort)
I just wanted to type that in all-caps in case anyone forgot how amusing McCain found that kind of name-calling when it was applied to a Democrat.

Also, obviously, he who lives by the lipstick metaphors dies by the lipstick metaphors. You lose, McCain.
