The "Lipstick on a pig" was a brilliant set up by the Obama campaign

They KNEW it would cause the McCain campaign to scream "sexist!"

And that would then allow Obama to claim that the GOP is "playing the gender card".

See this thread:

Remember how the McCain campaign used Obama's statements about "looking like others on the dollar bill" as an excuse to say "Obama is playing the race card?"

Well... the Obama campaign just set a trap and the McCain campaign walked into it.

At least, I HOPE it was on purpose (I like to think that the Obama campaign is THAT brilliant).

If, however, it was a lucky accident... that's ok too.

18. I don't know why McCain..
thought Obama was talking about Palin?

McCain's campaign called the comments "offensive and disgraceful" and said Obama owes Palin an apology. Obama's campaign said he wasn't referring to Palin and said the GOP camp was engaging in a "pathetic attempt to play the gender card." Obama's camp also noted that McCain once used the same phrase to describe Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan.

4. Absolutely...and McCain himself used that term to describe Clinton's health plan
You think the Obama campaign didn't know THAT?

Freepers getting played for fucking fools. It's great. The McCain camp is unhinged. Obama's people waited for the first really positive poist convention poll and went with the knife thrust. The McCainites, like good little imbeciles, reacted just as expected.

5. O Team got to bring out
that mccain said that about Hillary, too..so it's not just "the gender card" but the Obvious, ever present, Hypocricy card.

<snip snip>

"Enough is enough," Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn said in a statement e-mailed to reporters

"The Mc Cain campaign's attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy - the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan just last year," she continued. "This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run."

10. Brilliant subtle attack. They can easily deny anything personally negative against Palin.
It is a common saying. This was a great way to turn the tides today. Keep up Barack!

13. Also, it allows Obama to remind wayward Hillary supporters that McCain made the same comment...
directly at her. There is no question about that.

16. Halperin on CNN just said it was totally stupid for press to spend even a minute on this non-story.
If you've lost Halperin, you've lost the beltway insider tool.

20. Halperin is trying to salvage a vestige of right wing dignity
He knows the McCain campaign and the entire GOP machine was successfully baited and played like violins by Obama on this one, and he's trying to escape with some dignity. He doesn't want the press to hold it too long because the right looks ridiculous, and fell for a brilliant trap.

21. MAYBE, a brilliant set up
But if the response isn't quick and powerful enough, this backfires. I am dying to see this campaign kick some real ass. We can't be swiftboated and semi-respond.
