I think Josh Marshall is right about Palin.
It's interesting...and heartening...that the media is beginning to call out Palin on her lies.

Meme Taking Hold?

We've now had a week of blaring headlines and one-liners about Sarah Palin as the mavericky, pork-busting reformer from Alaska. But we seem to be witnessing the first stirrings of a backlash and a dawning realization that the 'Sarah Palin' we've heard so much about over the last few days is a fraud of truly comical dimensions.

The McCain camp has made her signature issue shutting down the Bridge to Nowhere. But as The New Republic put it today that's just "a naked lie." And pretty much the same thing has been written today in Newsweek, the Washington Post, the AP, the Wall Street Journal. Yesterday even Fox's Chris Wallace called out Rick Davis on it. (Do send more examples when you find them.)

On earmarks she's an even bigger crock. On the trail with McCain they're telling everyone that she's some kind of earmark slayer when actually, when she was mayor and governor, in both offices, she requested and got more earmarks than virtually any city or state in the country.

Think about that. On the stump, not a single word that comes out of her mouth -- or not a single word that the McCain folks put in her mouth -- is anything but a lie. I know that sounds like hyperbole. But just go down the list. None of them bear out.

57. We really shouldn't blame Sarah for her continuous lies and deceit.
The blame should be on McShames campaign posse of lobbyists who have demonstrated they will do anything to keep themselves in power, at any cost, whatever the casualties. I mean look what they have done to a once proud American hero. They have reduced him into a pathetic lying tired old man. This isn't the American Hero I once remember. I'm sure John McCain is ashamed, but is going with his lobbyist campaign hierarchy under the hope he can get elected. Basically the former hero John McShame has sold his soul to the very same Rovian men who told the world he had a black lovechild during the 2000 South Carolina primaries. The men he now trusts today are the ones he once despised for ruiining his reputation just eight years ago.

8. what's it been 10 days since they announced her?
and they've kept her nearly sequestered, except for the SAME canned speech of lies?

Of course there's a backlash! The buildup, and then no followup left everyone hungry for details that were real and verifiable. What a concept, huh?

The resentment could be huge when the truth filters out and down to the little people. All the women who think she's like them and identify with her will really be pissed.

And that will be the perfect time for an ad that says:
Palin: More Lies and Bullshit brought to you by the Same Old Republican Party

Really, her biggest strength is her immediate readiness to lie, and continue lying. Her lie delivery is so self-assured that people enjoy going along for the ride. We've got to hammer hammer hammer away at this; there's only two months left to penetrate those millions of dim and vindictive brains.

We've got to donate millions upon millions of dollars to get this out in the media that the low-info voters watch.

61. Well yes, duh, but bush does it less disprovably.
bush lies about things like WMD intelligence and can then say things like "we had the same info as everyone else". Palin lies about specific things that are a matter of public record, like Obama's "billion dollars" in earmark requests (actually $311 million last year, none this year), then repeats the lies after the record specifically proves her wrong. And the crowd goes wild. "Sa-rah! Sa-rah!"

This is the most frightening display of mindless fervor for a fascist leader that I've ever seen in America. But I'm sure it will be topped soon!

53. She absolutely has total contempt for
the truth and for people who try to call her on it. She is one of the worst types of "leaders" in that she believes power exists for her benefit only, to be exercised and abused at will to reach whatever goal she wants. Laws and rules are to be abused and bent at her pleasure, and to hell with the consequences as long as she gets what she wants. Look at her wholesale firing of anyone who didn't agree with her in Wasilla, especially the librarian. Look at troopergate and all the other similar examples. Look at how she exploits and uses her own children to further her ambitions and agendas. She doesn't understand what democracy and the ideals of this country are all about. She's probably never even read the constitution in its entirety. And her and her husband's membership in the self-admitted America-hating Alaska Independence Party shows just where their true values and allegiances really are. The membership may be former, but I suspect that's only because they realized she was never going to get anywhere politically if they stayed there.

And the fact that she continually dodges questions on the campaign trail should be of special concern and consternation to everyone, not just the media. She drips with contempt and disdain for anyone who doesn't fit into her own narrow views and for those who try to make her accountable. She is saying, in effect, that she can do whatever she wants and no one should be able to call her on it.

15. I agree with this. Since McCain's a gambler, I'll use a gambling analogy
On Palin he took a big gamble, and he hit the jackpot. The smart thing to do would have been to take his winnings home, but as all compulsive gamblers usually do, he doubled down instead, and he keeps doubling down, and it is looking like he did so one too many times. If things play out the way I hope they do, he'll end up squandering his winnings.

And the REPUGs have their "feel good" and they will hate anyone who tries to cool their heroic drama. Whether it is love at first sight or just plain midlife crisis these Repugs are set for the long haul, anything to appease their mojo or desperation, whichever it is, and they've accepted the marriage proposal on the first date, and plan to marry her in less than two months if they have their way. problem is we ALL will have to live with her after the honeymoon is over, which should take about 2 seconds. Guess their mamas never taught them how dangerous lust can be. They might as well have the inauguration in Vegas.

Because they assume that Democrats will do what they do: when someone admits a mistake, crucify them unmercifully for it. It's like telling your kid "it's OK if you ate the ice cream, as long as you're honest about it", and when they tearfully confess, beating the hell out of them.

23. I sure hope you're right, that this is taking hold.
Like I'm sure a lot of others have too, I've gone back and forth between mocking her as a tactical error to end them all and despairing that choosing her was a campaign masterstroke that's going to doom us to an ever worsening climate and fiscal crisis (plus, let's not forget that Bush pere won despite Qualye). But not only is she mountainously full of shit, against what seem to be all odds, it's actually being reported! I still think the media corporations are full-on in the tank for McCain, but maybe there's some hope? The GOP has OWNED the narrative of this campaign since they dropped Palin into the mix just in time to kibosh any discussion of Obama's DNC speech, maybe this could be the first sign of that slipping away. Again, I HOPE so, anyway.

Thanks for posting this, terrya. It was good to read that. K&R.

I'm still hopeful. I'm still hopeful that this stupid bullshit infatuation with Sarah Palin in the media will ultimately end. Refusing to talk to the press, except for some lovefest with corporate lackey Charles Gibson, the constant almost daily scandal du jour about her...that this choice of McCain's will have backfired. A certain ad was released by the McCain/Palin campaign yesterday...you know what it is. It's vile and beneath contempt. It shows that McCain/Palin have NOTHING positive to offer, as far as substantive policies and change. So, dredge up the culture wars again and engage in slanderously sleazy shit about Obama.

I'm still hopeful, asthmaticeog.

I'm convinced. We're convinced. But are they convinced?

Some of them are already on the fence. But this is the big question I have. And not just for this election. For all conservative supporters. How do we get to them? Especially without a media. But more especially since they are conservatives who are either in denial, or just lack introspection and examination of their concepts.

We already know that beyond a reasonable doubt doesn't often work on them. They stare the obvious in the face, and still remain steady.

Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 11:23 PM by AlbertCat
.... I personally think Palin is the excuse Repugs, and even Independents have been waiting for. The "They'll take my gun away" is a lame one, as is the "He's an elitist" or" he's a celeb" excuses. Or even "Abortion is murder". These excuses are to cover the real problem and I think it's Obama is black. They hate the Bush years, and don't really trust McCain, but thank a white Anglo-Saxon god they now have reason to vote for the white guy....and they still look like they're inclusive 'cause she's a GIRL! A girl who's just one of the guys.

I'm sorry, but the reasons for liking her just are too lame for the number of people excited about her. And they won't abandon her because she gives bigots cover.

I'm sorry to be so negative, but I really think the "some of my friends are even black" crowd is bigger than anyone dreams.

But look at the bright side, still more than 1/2 of potential voters prefer Obama. So the excuse crowd is still the same old minority that voted for Bush in the 1st place. But with cheating, it can be a winning minority. I hope the young people, who seem to recognize race but don't feel threatened by it (It's the same way they feel about gays) will come out on election day. But many of them don't.

Well, all I can do is support Obama and vote for his ticket.

58. I work for Verison, and I rerout phone calls coming from USA today.
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 03:37 AM by balrabbius
Well, telecommunication companies can re-rout calls from pollsters to the people who are supposed to give the answers republicans and corporations want to hear.

That can only happen in countries where telecommunication companies are legally protected from lawsuits and and criminal legislation, like America.

I'm not saying that we do that here, of course

59. The Bridge to Nowheres $280,000,000 was never returned to the Feds
She basically said thanks for the Bridge, we really want it.
Then she said, never mind, we'll use the 280,000,000 on pet projects of mine instead.
Then she says to the media that if Alaska wanted a bridge they'd build it themselves with their own money.

Could this lady be any more the pork belly earmark type of politician?

At least most Governors would use the earmarks they lobby for on the purpose they were awarded to. Not Sarah. She takes money for a bridge and spends it on her pet projects.

Disgusting. Totally disingenuous. Borderline criminal. Typical politician tied entirely to the DC lobbyist.

Alaska needs to pony up that 280,000,000 that their Governor says they never wanted for a bridge and give it back to the American taxpayers. There must be some accountability for these hundreds of millions of dollars. I'd like to know what pet projects she funded with our American money.

60. Yeah, but she's cute.
And that is all that will matter to the millions of stupid voters. Lies don't seem to matter much, W Bush being prime example.
