He started out as the son of a poor American family, spent six years in the Illinois state senate,
before moving on to congress for only two years. That was the extent of his legislative experience. He was a constitutional lawyer, a man who sewed this country together from its greatest period of disunity, and he was a divisive figure.

He was one of two individuals who opposed a popular, yet immoral, concept of the U.S. from the beginning of his career.

He spoke out against what many considered an unjust and imperialistic war.

Many said he didn't have the experience to run; others said that he would cave to enemies' demands. But he carried the day, becoming one of, if not the most, respected presidents in history.

He was not Barack Obama (at least not yet).

He was Abe Lincoln.
