Folks,
Yesterday I did some canvassing, along with a friend of mine, in VA. She and I met at the Obama office in Bethesda, MD office around 2:00 p.m. When we arrived the place was packed! Volunteers were everywhere! (She had canvassed the week before and there were only 8 volunteers!) I think the "Palin Effect" is taking shape. People are pissed and fired up. I was so happy to see people of all races, all ages, all income levels. I saw students and seniors. Seriously, everyone was really excited and pissed off. There's something about Sarah Palin, aka, "The Puppet," that is quite disturbing. I think she has done a very good thing: united the Democrats and have scared them into action!!
DU, let me tell you: the Obama campaign is incredibly organized. We started at 2:00 p.m. on the dot. Volunteers who had never canvassed before were given in-depth training. Those of use who are experienced were given our packets and sent on our way.
We worked in the City of Fairfax, VA, targeting Independents and Undecideds. In the end, we knocked on 65 doors, just the two of us.
The bad news: many people, about half of them, were not home. It was a gorgeous day yesterday and we assumed that people were out and about. Kids also go back to school today, so that may have been a factor as well.
The good news: Of those that were home, we had about 8 STRONG OBAMA supporters; 4 LEANING OBAMA supporters. There were 2 STRONG MCCAIN supporters and 3 LEANING MCCAIN. There were several UNDECIDEDS and several who REFUSED (people who refused to speak to us).
All in all, a good step for VA.
We will continue to work hard here. I believe that we can win VA. For those voters who weren't at home, the Obama campaign will send another team to hit those homes. For those who are on the fence, they have specialists who will call or visit those voters to try and persuade them to Obama.
Me and my friend will work this Saturday and Sunday again.
Note: it is unnecessary to devote your entire day to volunteering. We left around 2:30 from the office in Bethesda and were done by 5:15. We got back to the office a little before 6:00 p.m. So, you see, it didn't require too much time and it can be fun talking to people especially if they're nice. Even one McCain supporter was very friendly to us. The other strong McCain supporters/leaners weren't rude or mean, but just very strident in her support. Obama people will speak with McCain leaner as well; they will not speak to strong McCain supporters.
So the work continues!!
