23. Dear God,
in November, please make this graphic true. Please. This poor country can't take any more of this. I'll do whatever you want me to. Thank you and amen.

Republicans can easily steal two or three states courtesy of Diebold and steal the election.

7. Yes we can...
this site shows the voting systems used in each county and in each state:
http://www.verifiedvoting.org/index.php

I believe it states that half of the population now votes on systems using either paper ballots, or paper recorders, because state's have legislated the requirement. Other states have enacted automatic standard recounts after every election. And there are still those states that have no paper and no ability to conduct a recount. If we the people want our votes counted, I think we have to contact our own state legislators and demand that they provide accurate systems to tabulate our votes. Rush Holt has yet another bill in Congress that will provide money to cover the costs of adding paper or audits to any state that wants it. Unfortunately our states will not opt in unless they feel some pressure from the citizens of their states to do so. Nor will the bill be passed unless people contact their representatives and ask them to pass the legislation. I have read that this election will be as much impacted by problems with registrations as voting machines, and every voter is urged to check their registrations before the elections in November..regardless of how long you've been registered.

21. I think we have to consider already stolen states lost.
Ohio, Florida, and New Mexico seem to be fixed for the GOP and unless someone goes to jail for previous election thefts in the next couple of weeks, we can assume it will happen again.

We should also assume that the states which Karl Rove targeted for US attorney firings are also targets for theft. The eleven attorneys most obviously targeted for replacement in 2005-2007 were from: New Mexico, California, Arizona, Washington (state), Michigan, Missouri, Arkansas, Maryland, and West Virginia.

New Hampshire also requires mention because it was the target of a major Republican vote-supression scheme in 2000.

However, there are counter-current factors worth considering. By now we know what they're going to try to do and some of us may have hatched a plan to counter it.

Honestly, I hope someone plans to steal a few post-"emergency patch" memory cards this year. I know that's against the law, but so is stealing elections, and if the feds won't do anything about it then it's up to the people themselves to make things right.

this would be true... but there were also huge counter measures going on.

9. To be fair, these are all old polls
I think people need to calm down a bit. A convention bounce is normal and there are going to be some outlier polls too. And though we keep thinking this should be a blowout, given that McCain is NOT the incumbent and is one of the best-known politicians in the country, the race might very well end up being quite close (within 3 points), despite the Democratic trend. In that sense, this might well be more like 1960 than 1980-in-reverse (in '60 Dems were favored and lead in generic numbers but the final result was extremely tight).

Of course, I admit it's tough to stay calm whenever you see bad polls. And Dems have been spooked by far too many lost presidential races.

BUT, in the interest of fairness, I don't think the state-by-state polls should really be much comfort right now. There has been virtually no state-by-state polling since the Republican convention ended and since the Palin pick.

Honestly, though everyone here is jittery, we need to wait a couple weeks to get a better idea of where the race stands. It's VERY volatile right now.

And if it turns out that McCain IS ahead in two weeks -- then punch your pillow, take a couple drinks and then... volunteer! And don't give up! Kerry was behind Bush by 5-10 points all through September and in the end it was very close. (Okay, not the best example.) Reagan was behind Carter through much of the fall and only jumped to a lead one week out. Kennedy was behind Nixon up until the debates. And Gore was behind Bush after the debates in all the polls yet won the popular vote and should have won the electoral vote.

We're a ways away from November people.

11. If people come out to vote... I really don't think there is a chance... The biggest chance of losing
is if people really started to get too much of obama, or think that he is so far ahead, they don't feel the need to vote.

12. Voting machines once again to save
the election for the Republicans. It so appears that's the reason corporate media keeps the polls so close, so they can steal the election like they have been doing.
