The One Door Knock that Made My Entire Day Worthwhile
As some know, I needed a boost midday, posting almost out of desperation for good luck to be sent my way. Well, this is a big thanks DUers, because I got back out there after a fairly discouraging day of talking to all kinds of voters, registered Dems, Repugs, Independent Americans (don't ask), Non-partisans and Libertarians (uggh...).

And here's my story.

I was walking a list of targeted voters - a list that the field organizer had created. I was getting frustrated because the houses on the list were so far apart and sporadically spaced, and it was hot. Wanting to clean up the list and get the stragglers, I walked quite a distance for one house. As I approached, two men were sitting on their porch. One was on his cell, the other was very old. I waved and walked a bit further to allow the man on his cell to finish his call. When I walked back by, they both waved and I approached.

The targeted voter was 22 years old, a registered Repug, neither fitting this description. I asked if 'James' was around, and they both answered, "He's in jail." I explained that I was walking for the General Election and that I would mark him down to recontact at a later date. "James is my son. Whose campaign are you with?" The younger of the two asked. "Obama," I answered. He smiled slyly and put his beer down. I braced myself for a negative response -- again, it had been a long day with many McCain supporters or undecideds -- what Democrat in their right mind can be undecided at a time like this?!.

"Good on you!" he exclaimed. I breathed a sigh of relief, and the elderly man, rail thin and toothless, interrupted loudly, "It doesn't matter who wins anyway..."

"Oh, boy," I thought, "here we go again."

"Jesus is coming and he's gonna make the final decision, and he's coming soon," he said, shaking his fist at me. I politely smiled and responded, "Well, until he does, I will try my hardest to make a difference." I turned toward the other man and he winked at me. The old man got up, shook my hand, said "Good day" and went inside. "Thanks for being so polite to my dad," the man said. "No problem," I said. I had thoughts of ending the conversation right there, but something made me stay. "If your son gets out of jail, he should check and see if he can still vote." "You know," said the man, "I'd like to know how I can do that." I thought he was referring to his son, so I started to explain. "No," he said, "I've never registered to vote and I'd like to do that." "Well," I said, "I have voter registration forms right here. Wanna do that now?"

He did. And he asked a lot of questions, like, where he needs to go vote, how the voting is done, etc., questions that so many of us take for granted as seasoned voters. I spent the next half hour telling him how to vote. It felt good, and he was appreciative of me taking the time to tell him how while not passing judgment on him for not ever having done this. We shook hands and he thanked me for the work I was doing. He told me how badly his business was doing, and how poor and ill his father was -- how he had to move in with him to take care of him, and how senility had set in. I said, "Just don't forget to vote," as I walked away. He yelled back "You have my word I'll vote! Let's get these assholes outta' there!"

That was worth all the door knocks -- all the assholes; all the whiners; all the greedy, ill-informed voters; all the pissy people who couldn't be bothered -- that I completed today.

A man in his 50's who had never voted in his life who just needed someone to help him do it.

influence others to do the same...and you will have provided more than one vote for Obama...

52. Thank you, BrklynLiberal
I hope his registering to vote will motivate others in his circle to do the same.

I think we all feel hopeless, and even helpless to some degree, under the weight of our worry, disgust and didain from the last 8 years of the Bush/Cheney, Inc. product. Just through the simple act of some stranger coming up to one's door step, others can see that they are not alone, and can be motivated to do their part. It's empowering, and I hope he does pay it forward to a good end.

Thank you.
Your story is way better than mine

I was out for our State Rep this morning, and when I asked one man if we could count on his vote he said of course...
then he looked me square in the face and asked..."Are you working for Obama too?"
I said that I was getting ready to help that campaign as well.

he said OK, I'll take that Barrett yard sign now. Whole household full of Obama supporters.

They keep telling me all politics is local -- and I commend you for your fine efforts to support your local reps as well as working for Obama. I always sigh in relief when I hit an entire household voting for Democrats. It seems here in NV, just because they're registered Dems doesn't necessarily guarantee they're in the bag.

Good on you!

On edit, I just looked at your profile and see you are in Fort Worth. I lived there for a year when I was in first grade -- in Benbrook. All I recall is playing in the red dirt and building forts out where new houses were going in. There was a river or some steady flow of water nearby, and I recall one day my older sister crossed a concrete barrier that water flowed over. I was so little, I wanted to follow her and even tried but almost fell in. Oh, the things we used to do!

I also lived in Houston for 10 years. :hi: from a fellow Texan at heart.

I am near there, in fact Benbrook is in this Leg District and I did my first blockwalk in Benbrook, back in July.

If you pull up a map of FW I am just west of where I-35 crosses I-20 about 15 minutes from Benbrook.

There is only one natural lake in the entire state of Texas, Caddo Lake.

Compared to Lake Worth, Eagle Mountain, Possum Kingdom, Ray Hubbard, Grapevine and Joe Pool (all lakes in the Metroplex) Benbrook is a baby lake.:hi:

I, on the other hand, was riding my bike today, and noticed one of the local assholes in his unmuffled four-by with a McCain bumper sticker. My first McCain bumper sticker. It's like putting a "Kick me" note on one's own back. Haha. But it still sucks to see it.

34. I was intimidated at first, too
and every knock is a little butterfly in the stomach for me, in a way. I felt the way you describe in '04, and I said to myself, "You are going to do this." I practiced on all my Repug and undecided family members first -- when I got my talking points down to a concise, logical, easy to remember level, I felt better about knocking on a stranger's door.

My 17 year old and her three friends walked and knocked for the first time today. I worried about them all day, wondering what they'd encounter. Two in particular are very shy. They paired up, of course, and I tried to give them a few pointers (including safety pointers). They have some funny stories to tell, too. And while none of them could honestly say they actually liked it, they all said they'd do it again. There's something intrinsically satisfying about getting out and talking to other people about things that are so incredibly important, it's hard to describe.

You can do it, calmblueocean!! Good luck! :hi:

69. I'm in Reno, NV - a battleground state
Home to the worst governor in our state's history, Jim Gibbons, fundie "The Fellowhip" Senator John Ensign, and my personal pick for the winner of the most ineffectual Congressman yet, Dean Heller. Good ole' boy state. It can be 'red, red', especially here in parts of Reno and in the rural areas. Although, iirc, NV went for Bill Clinton. And I think Democrats have finally surpassed Repugs in statewide voter registration. We can do it, even if it means asking for one vote at a time.

36. A wonderful story.
But isn't it incredible that we do such a poor job of educating our children in this country, that they don't even understand how important voting is, what an honor and privilege it is? I will never know why civics isn't a requirement, and not just one class in high school, but right through all the grades. Why aren't all 18 year olds registered automatically? I had a professor in college who said that all Americans should be required to pass the same citizenship test that immigrants do, and that it should be a real occasion, a "Welcome to Citizenship" ceremony, with registration a part of it. I think he was onto something. If we made much more of a big deal of it, we might not have people going most of their lives without voting.

37. Thanks for this
I am with you -- out in the field everyday here in red state, and I know how tough it can be and how much you look forward to jumping on DU for refuge:-) Most of the time people here are very supportive and we field volunteers need that so much.

I loved your story and it will inspire me tomorrow.

Today, I was registering people who could not read. I had to fill it out for them. They were so tenuously grateful, so hopeful, so proud to plan on voting for the first time.

I can relate to the humbling experience -- and how uplifting it is. I think we are seeing democracy, humanity, at work. It moves me everyday.

I salute you for doing what I will have to start doing in a few weeks. For now it's all voter registrations and then we move on. The other day, I had a man switch his vote to Obama because I was willing to register him even though he was a republican. When I told him that was the fundamental of a democracy, of being an American, and that Obama supported that and so did I-- that is what we were working so hard for!-- he thought about it and decided to switch his vote because he said he'd never heard of a candidate who walked that talk. I was so proud of our guy!

I find Obama's ideas resonate with people-- they recognize patriotism and love of this country-- no matter what level education, background, etc.

I am so with you on the hot thing-- everyday I come home sweaty and exhausted. And then I think, I wonder if I missed someone. It's mentally and emotionally draining and also rewarding beyond belief.

thank you for all that you are doing....I am so glad to hear from you, and it will inspire me to make it through the next racist ass I run into.

YOU ROCK!!!

43. Let me add my story to yours
because I had a similar day of door knocking yesterday and I also had that one bright moment.

I was about mid-way through my list and we (went with my 13 year old granddaughter, teaching her young) were about to leave some lit at a house when a man came around the corner with hedge trimmers in hand.

After I introduced myself and Tori and why we were knocking on his door his face lit up. "I've been a Republican," he started and I winced, "until four years ago." (sigh of relief from me) "I'm a Christian," he continued, "and I'm against abortion but the Republicans will never do anything about that. They only bring it up at election time. I'm going to vote for the people that will at least do something about all the other problems we have and my wife and I are both voting Obama."

That gentleman and I had a nice conversation after that and he may even volunteer (in spite of health issues). HE kept apologizing for taking up my time as if he was the knocking on my door.

That one door knock made my day!

44. I am volunteering in Ohio on Monday too - It will be in respect to Barack and people like you!
Thank you for taking your time to make a difference!

As a side note: I quit my church in 1959 because of the way they ran down Catholics and JFK from the pulpit and with pamphlets they handed out in our church. I was only 14 then, but I was "old" for my age and it didn't sit well with me that people who professed a Godly manner were dragging down a man that I heard as being an inspiration to humanity, let alone to our own country! I heard JFK saying a lot of the same things Barack says and in that spirit I will go forward as best as I can at my age to try and make some dent in those who use God's name to further their greed and hypocrisy to the very earth we were given stewardship of.

It's all about getting people who will be affected the most to VOTE!

46. THANK YOU.
This. Is. How. We. Win.

Concentrated focus, dogged door-knocking and grunt work.

Emit, thank you for loving your country enough to do this kind of work. You have to knock on a lot of doors to win the prize. I applaud you, I'm knocking too, and I implore everyone reading this to get behind your example, get off their asses, and take this to the GROUND.

This. Is. How. We. Win.

Thank you, fellow door-knocking warrior!!!!!!

47. Thanks for getting out there, especially in a Repub area.
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 07:23 AM by Maureen1322
I am doing the same thing only I'm in a primarily Dem area.
My biggest problem is "pissy people who can't be bothered"
I have to resist the urge to take them and shake them.
This election will be won on the ground and we need all the help we can get.

67. K&R
Canvassing is tough, but it definitely has it's moments. I was driving for ACT and got a few people right off the street and took them to their polling place. They weren't even going to go.

Wisconsin was so close it came down to literally one vote per precinct. I made a real difference that day. Feels GREAT! Good job!

70. As someone who has walked, knocked on doors since I was 17, you are a hero to me.
Unless one has ever canvassed neighborhoods and worked from poorly printed sheets as you struggle to find apartments or houses or mobile homes, unless you have had people scream at you from their porches as you approach their homes, unless you have walked alone on streets you've never known in the rain with even the flu on behalf of a candidate or our party, then it's easily understood how the sacrifice of someone like Emit can be taken for granted.

I was more moved by your post than just about anything I've read at the DU in months.

You are a true "foot soldier" for changing our nation and our planet.

You are a hero to me, Emit.

Every post you write from this moment on will always be seen by me through that prism.

K&R.

Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 04:23 PM by RoccoR5955
...there still may be hope for all of us yet!

We need a million like you to get out there and do this hard job. I'll be doing the phone banks later this month, and if I can get the time off, I'll take a bus trip to one of the battleground states, and sign up voters myself. We all have to work REAL HARD, if we want this one. The republic party will use their tactics, and we will use the tactics that we know best, and we use best, face to face meetings with people, and the new technology. Community organizing is one of the strengths of Democrats, because they have more passion than any in the republic party.

serving your country in the finest sense. Kind, generous, patient, sympathetic, inclusive, helpful, truthful - EVERYTHING sarah palin proved she was NOT, the other night. You were, in effect, one of those dreaded community organizers - and evidently this fellow appreciated you instead of mocking you. You did us all a favor!

Hug!

I started canvasing for the first time yesterday to, and taking 5 more people out with me tomorrow. I don't mean to hijack your thread but in seeing the good responses back, I just want to try to remind everyone here that you can make a difference like this to and that is exactly what it is going to take for Barack Obama to win. We have to get those voters..they won't do it watching them on tv. Don't depend on others to do it for you, if you want Obama as your president please get out and help make it happen.

99. I Just Want to Thank Everyone Who Responded to this Thread!!
I'm a little embarrassed, though, and I have to say, I am but one volunteer, and there are many, many more out there -- more who do much more than I do. They deserve the kudos.

They are heroes -- And there are many here at DU, some who told their stories on this thread -- I want to say to them now, "Thank YOU, for all that you do for US!" :hi: :patriot:

This experience I had -- this man that I wrote about in the OP -- lifted my spirits when I had a discouraging day. DUers lifted my spirits that day, too, with their/your 'go get 'em!' attitude and responses. This first-time voter made me realize there is hope and THAT is what keeps us all going.

In turn, I hope this thread encourages more folks to get out and knock and talk, if only to their immediate friends, family and neighbors. And, likewise, I hope it boosts the spirits of those who are out their beating the pavement.

Thanks everyone and good luck out there!! :hi:
