I flipped the bird at G.W. Bush…and he pointed at me
Here is my account of the protest at the Bush rally in Wheeling WV, Sun 8/29:

We met up with the Steel workers, mine workers, and electrical workers at a union hall about 1 mile south of the rally at 12:30. There were over 50 of us. Signs in hand, we marched to the Rally, where there were already other protesters gathered right across the street from the entrance to the Wesbanco Arena.

Most of the crowd was already inside when we got there, but we traded words and chants with the Bush supporters as they waited to get inside. By this time our crowd numbered around 100 people. One of the union guys (I am so terrible with names), was a great chant leader and kept our energy high.

When things outside the arena quieted down, we walked out to Main Street to await the Commander in Thief’s motorcade. He went right by us. I have to admit, I kind of missed the moment, as I had called Daisygirl who had to stay home, just to give her a taste of the ambiance of the protest. But other people saw him in his limo as he went by.

After W passed by, we walked to the other side of the Arena, where he was sure to see us when he left. The street was opened back up, and we got a lot of thumbs up from the cars passing by, and a few thumbs down. Someone was talking on their phone to a person watching on the local news, where it was reported that there were NO protesters at the rally.

Traffic was again stopped, and we knew it would soon be time for the (P)resident to leave. People were starting to leave the rally and we were trading words with many of them as they walked by. The motorcade then left the parking lot, and we were set up right at the exit to the lot, where they had to turn slowly onto the street. Sign in one hand, as soon as I saw the limos, I started to give them the finger. I saw Bush in the back of his limo, and he looked straight at me and pointed. He was less than 15 feet away from me.

Throngs of people leaving the rally were now heading down the street, right by us. Words were exchanged back and forth as they passed. One person threw a plum at us, who was then grabbed by the cops and escorted out of the area. Another woman was getting in our faces shouting, “Are you SAVED? You can’t be SAVED”, but a cop came up and put his arm around her and convinced her to go on her way. One of the TV stations set up their cameras and a union leader got to talk for about 5 minutes about what Bush had done to our country.

After things quieted down, about 30 of us marched up to the TV station that had said there were no protesters. No one from the station would come out, but someone called them and we were told that they would not come out, but they had film of us from earlier, and we would be on the six o’clock news. We walked the mile back to our car, my feet very sore, and my face sunburned. But I have to say it was worth it.

Today, I checked the Wheeling paper for an account. NO mention of protesters. The only thing I could find was an article in the Pittsburgh paper which ended with this sentence: West Virginia State Police trooper J.M Andreas said more than 100 Kerry supporters had rallied outside the arena during the event.

One more note: There was a photographer (sorry, no description) in a tan fishing vest with mesh pockets. He took hundreds of pictures of us, from all angles. I don’t think he was with the local paper. He spent way too much time and film on us. Be on the lookout for this guy at other protests. I may be tin-foil hatting here, but I think he must have been some sort of government agent.

1. good work, Mongo
I wrote to the editor of the Wheeling paper just today, asking him/her to start supporting our troops, and enclosing a suggestion of how to proceed in the envelope.

5. I bet that felt great.
The only satisication I get is flipping off these whacko pro-lifers every morning who have put up a sign calling Kerry a murderer. But to give the finger to the man himself... congratulations. I envy you.

6. When he pointed at you, was he smirking?
Because I think he really gets off on the fact that people hate him so much. It makes him feel powerful, and that's what it's all about with him: Power. In interviews he'll say that everything is great and that he doesn't see that many protestors, but that's bullshit. He just feigns ignorance and innocence because it plays well in the red states.

14. how bad is it in WV vote wise?
are that many people in favor of * - is it related to the coal industry/economic perceptions? We were down in that area/ WV- Ohio border/ last week for a road trip and I did not see any Kerry bumperstickers, but a number of Bush/Cheney ones. I have seen only 2-3 * stickers here in Pgh where I live, over the last few months and many, many Kerry ones. Thanks for making other voices heard at the rally. Although, I myself personally would not flip off the Pres.

BTW Clinton was at a booksigning here today, and many people were at a local Barnes and Noble to see him. Didn't see any protestors there. :)

19. awesome!
Good for you! Even though I am a Canadian, I would love to let Bush know how I feel about him.

I just want to say thanks to all of you for standing up to Bush and his right-wing neo-fascist policies and ideas. It just isn't the future of America that is at stake, but indeed the entire world's. I feel pretty much helpess up here, not really being able to do anything (and it would be fair to say that because I'm not Americian, I shouldn't be able to do anything in regards to electing an American President), but knowing that there are people like you guys helps me sleep easier at night.

Thank you very much!

16. So glad you gave him the finger...
It reminds me of a very famous photo taken during the democratic convention in 1968. There are a group of protesters and one lone young man is give a very pissed version of the finger right at the photographer. I have always loved that photo.
To me that one photo sums it all up. They were pissed as we are now.
Good work.
As far as that gov't agent, it probably was infact an agent. They either are in the protest groups trying to insight violence or they are taking photos for the future witch hunts. Let them take their photos. Infact I would pose in a few just to piss him off. When our freedoms need to be documented, that is a sad time for our country

21. You ought of to respect the office
even if you disagree with some of the man's policies.
Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be
petty. Always remember, others may hate you. Those who
hate you don’t win unless you hate them. And then you
destroy yourself.

25. When the President goes out of the office
the office goes out with him. The "office" is a
allegorcal concept, like a aura or historical
blanket. If you want to flip off the bird at
something flip the bird at his policies,
not the office (that is ALWAYS around him, like the
air around the earth, or a invisible cape full of
respect and legicy running down from Washington.)

23. I remember
back when the Clinton-hating was going full throttle and I was having a conversation with two very rabid neo-cons. I asked the question "If you had a personal audience with Pres. Clinton, would you shake his hand?"

I was taken aback to hear them both say "Yes.I don't respect the man, but I respect the office."

A little anecdotal story that really means nothing, but I do agree with you A-Schwarzenegger. As much as I despise *Bush, I wouldn't stoop to such antics. Only my opinion of course.

24. thank you, President Nixon
I LOVE that going away speech, with the sweaty upper lip, the swoony sneer/smile

the BEST part was when he called his mother a saint

I LOVED the way the camera panned to his wife/kids, then the audience, including Kissinger

they ALL looked like they'd rather have been in an abbatoir

well, they were, actually

that was the epitome of schadenfreude

the ONLY thing that will surpass it (please, PLEASE, lord!) will happen in about 64 days, or so, THEN on Jan. 21, 2005

''Hey......that's my SKULL!

I/m (gonna be) SO wasted!''

As for the woman shrieking about whether or not you're saved, you should have told her that we all will be when * is voted out of office!

As for respect - give me a break! If I don't think he's qualified to BE in the office (and I don't), and he's given no reason for me to respect him (and he hasn't), I would gladly flip him off too. That's not disrespecting the office, it's flipping off the man. Well done!

the government would take pics of protesters. I recall that there was some guy in Arizona who was taking pics of anti-war protesters last year and threatened to post them on his website, hoping that if their employers saw how "unpatriotic" they were, they would be fired.

Nice people these pugs.
