Excerpts of McCain's remarks tonight

Posted: Thursday, September 04, 2008 6:49 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray

John McCain on Palin and change: "I’m very proud to have introduced our next vice president to the country. But I can’t wait until I introduce her to Washington. And let me offer an advance warning to the old, big spending, do nothing, me first, country second Washington crowd: change is coming."

On reaching out to political opponents: "The constant partisan rancor that stops us from solving these problems isn’t a cause, it’s a symptom. It’s what happens when people go to Washington to work for themselves and not you. Again and again, I’ve worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed. That’s how I will govern as President. I will reach out my hand to anyone to help me get this country moving again. I have that record and the scars to prove it. Sen. Obama does not."

(Note: While McCain decries partisan rancor, by our count, his campaign has aired at least 15 different negative/contrast TV ads against Obama since mid-July, when he departed on his overseas trip.)

On his love of country: "I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.”

"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for..." Cindy McCain's $300,000 Outfit and 10 to 12 houses.

Partisan rancor (actually pure idiocy)

Edited title: Just dawned on me that this implies McCain wasn't "in love" with his country before that. Will the media call him on this?

1. didn't he also write in one of his books it was the memory of Carol
that kept him going? And maybe a picture?

I've got a problem with his "falling in love"- that kind of love, is love that can be "fallen out of"- it isn't the deep abiding love that comes over time, and lasts forever, even through disillusionment and disappointment, it is also the kind of love that doesn't ignore faults or deny problems- but has the courage and faith to address them as they arise. Not infatuation- not lust- but REAL LOVE.

I assume he wasn't in love with his country prior to that.

country!
Tell us again, why were we in VietNam, John? Robert McNamara thinks it was a mistake.
And he ought to know.
