This is my last post as Hockey Mom

I do not wish to associated Sara Palin. This woman does not represent me, my daughters, or anything close to the life I have lead.

I choose this nickname about 10 years ago when my younger daughter first started playing ice hockey as the only girl on a boys hockey team. Yes, she was the first girl to ever play on our area's Freshman HS team. I was, and am, very proud of her accomplishments both on the ice rink and in the classroom. My daughter went from being a very shy, struggling, special needs little girl, to a college athlete, and now a confident young teacher, who by the way, still plays ice hockey on an adult team in her spare time. I choose the nickname because I was proud of her.

I am also very proud of my older daughter, too. She is also a beautiful, confident, caring, young woman. She is also a lesbian. I can remember the day she came out to us when she was 20 years old. She told me later that she was terrified of what we as her parents would say. Would we "disown" her? Of course not. We knew many years before she ever told us. As we said to her at the time, "So what else is new"? She is who she is and we are proud of her. The same as we are proud of her straight sister.

I do not wish to turn this into an autobiography. I just wish to disown Sara Palin. I am very, very sorry that this woman is dragging us "hockey moms" through the mud. We are both female and mothers. That is where it ends. As far as I am concerned, Ms. Palin may as well be Ann Coulter for all I would ever vote for her.

I am very, very PROUD of both of my daughters. I am sure Ms. Palin loves her children, but can she truly say she is PROUD of them?

You were Hockey Mom first because of your hockey playing daughter and they didn't (and don't) care one iota about hockey. I can understand why you want to change your s/n and the honchoes here at DU should grant an exemption to you if you want it, but dammit, we can't let them frame things.
Your daughters both sound like well adjusted wonderful ladies, although hockey players...JUST KIDDING btw. Nothing wrong at all with being proud that your kid is a hockey player. for your kind words and encouragement. I never expected the tremendous response to this. Again, thank you. This Sara Palin nomination has really gotten me depressed and angered at being somehow associated with her. I did not know that I would have to start over again if I choose a new nick. I came to this site 4 years ago from John Kerry's website. I am very glad that I found it. It really cheers me up know there are thousands of people across the country who share my views.
