Obama Suddenly Riled
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Sen. Barack Obama ditched his normal languid cool today, punching back at Gov. Sarah Palin as he spoke with reporters in York, Pa, hotly defending his work as a community organizer. He said he assumes Palin "wants to be treated same way guys want to be treated, which means their records are under scrutinty. I've been through this for 19 months. She's been through it, what four days?"

Obama's hackles were clearly raised by Palin's dismissal of his community organizing --a response to his earlier dismissal of her record as a small-town mayor. "Why would that kind of work be ridiculed?" Obama said. "Who are they fighting for?" The idea that community organizing is not relevant to the presidency, he said, just shows why Republicans "are out of touch and don't get it."

-----

Obama said the "essential question" of the campaign is "who's got a better plan and agenda to move this country forward and fundamentally change it from the economic and foreign policy failures we've seen for the last eight years."

"The American people need change and want change and I'm in the best position to do it," Obama said.

Obama brushed off the attacks with, "I've been called worse on the basketball courts," and said all Republicans have done so far is dwell on "attacking me or extolling John McCain's biography."

I'm glad he won't hesitate to punch back. I admire -- even envy -- his coolness under fire, but occasionally just getting riled up is the correct response.

40. Yeah, he hit back well... but he wasn't "riled." He was the same calm, unshakeable dude he's been .
... the whole campaign. I was VERY impressed by his responses to that set of questions. I think he may do OK in the debates.

this account is way off according to what I saw - and what I saw is what you saw.

guess they can't get that 'angry black man' to take their bait so they're making it up?

If anything, he might have had a short amount of time available, so he was a little short, but he was nowhere near upset.

36. Exactly.
I saw the video too. He didn't come across as "riled" at all. Course I don't know. Next to McCain, I guess most anything could come across as fiery.

C ya,

I don't agree that he was "riled" - he seemed cool to me. He was very smooth and eloquent in his response, very direct and to the point but not ranting and raving like a lunatic. It was a calm but firm response.

15. This is my email to clochhead@sfchronicle.com
I think that Sarah Palin earned her high school nickname of Baracuda. John McCain is famous for his temper.

Sarah is the angry white woman and John McCain is the angry white man.

Obama is the coolest politician I have ever seen. It's obvious that he is not an angry guy. Biden is, as everyone points out, a talker. He is genial by nature.

To say that Obama was riled just doesn't match the video--or his nature.

14. I like this man - he really handles their crap so well - someone to
look up to - I just watched the movie Debaters (Denzel Washington) and was struck with how similar the feelings are today as then - the party of right wingers are not much different than the white vigilantes of yesterday - all the sayings that have been code over the years for this discrimination - states rights - red states and blue states match the states that refused mixed marriages until it became law - I found myself scared for the black people in the movie, afraid to go out at all, yet they did, against all odds.

I like that Barack had so many surround him in Germany which shows the usa can get back it's good reputation and that not everyone has to travel with so many people to protect themselves like B@#$@#$@#

Just interesting to hear about the repubs convention and it is mostly white and empty and we have a gun toting white woman with a trash mouth against a educated harvard graduate with a PHd - the rednecks try to bring everyone to their level and Barack is one who is having nothing to do with it

He is willing to not lose sight of the goal or be distracted by all the nonsense

I find myself continuing searching the internet for good things about everything but instead find too much about these right wingers and the media who promotes them and their ideas under the guise of telling news -

I have faith in this man right now and hope he can do a lot but we need open democrats who are willing to make change also and stop doing the things that have been destroying america in the name of greed and corporations

30. Barack Obama is too much of a gentleman to put himself on her level.
But I will say it for him. She is a vile, lying bitch! She is a liar and a terrible mother and grandmother! Why have there never been any photos of her holding "her" newborn son in the hospital? I felt so sorry for the poor baby boy last night being tossed around from person to person, and slept through it all. Strange.

33. Damn, he makes it look like no sweat.
Maybe that's why the Republicans have been bumbling after him trying to copy everything he does yet failing with their half-assed copies. Bush can't pull off the stuff Obama's suggested because of his administration with their history of belligerence and lack of diplomacy. McCain can't pull off the change meme by simply trying to revamp his "maverick" image because a maverick is by definition, UNRELIABLE, and denotes personal volatility and NOT the kind of permanent change a country needs. Palin can't pull off his likability and sense because she's plain unenlightened and is of the sort that thinks that simply taking things by force will help. She's the unreasonable mother-in-law every guy hates, the bitter schoolmarm every student avoids, the overbearing mother every child is embarrassed by and the shrill neighborhood gossip that everyone has the same opinion about.

So damn, Obama, just keep doing your thing and keep being coolly Presidential. We'll be your community organizers and get you to the White House.
