Bronx Organizers React to G.O.P. Punch Lines
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:22 PM by lurky
From today's New York Times City Room blog:
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/04/south-bronx-organizers-react-to-gop-punchlines/

Talk about love amid the ruins. When the Bronx was burning, a romance sparked between John Reilly and Lois Harr. They were young and idealistic. They were determined to put into practice the lessons they learned at Catholic colleges about their faith, their neighbors and responsibility. They were community organizers.

The Bronx that was the backdrop to their courtship is gone. It has been remade by housing they helped renovate or build, occupied by residents they helped train to demand basic city services like sanitation, police and schools. The two of them continue to do community-spirited work in the Bronx, he as the head of a nonprofit housing group, and she as the director of campus ministries at a local college.

Understandably, they were dumbstruck at how both former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and the vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin turned community organizing into a running joke during their speeches Wednesday night at the Republican convention.

3. startled me too!

(for anyone who reads this thread after the link is fixed--it's a picture of a cool tattoo, but nothing to do with community organizing. I always hate missing the bus on these things so I thought I'd relieve the curiosity of those who see this later)

4. She may have made a big mistake with this one
it's one thing to attack your opponent, it's another to trash hard working people trying to make this country a better place.

This one issue may create the biggest backlash of all from average working people.
