A Palin convert

by trenttsd
Thu Sep 04, 2008 at 08:33:22 AM PDT
Last night, Sarah Palin made a convert out of me.

<...>

That brings us to last night. Until last night, I was slightly leaning towards Obama, but I hadn't firmly decided who I was voting for. I held out hope that during the Convention, I could get a real grasp on where the Republican Party was.

Last night, Sarah Palin gave a speech that was in theory meant to get people like me excited about the Republican ticket. This was one that should have gotten me back on board and excited about the McCain/Palin platform.

Instead, it sickened me in a very deep and personal way.

I could go through some of the quotes that made my stomach turn, but many others have already done a great analysis of the speech.

All I heard was a long stream of extremely bitter attacks against Barack Obama, none of which go even the slightest step towards solving the problems of this country. When I tuned in, Rudy Giuliani was firing off some attacks, but I expected that - every convention has some room for criticism of the opposition.

<...>

This morning, I donated $250 to Barack Obama's campaign. Tomorrow, I'm stopping by the voter registration office to change my party affiliation to Democrat. Saturday, I hope to plant an Obama-Biden sign in my front yard.

This lack of respect for your political opponents, this denial of basic human rights to those who oppose us, this complete emptiness of policy - it ends. Right here, right now.

27. She looks and sounds like Roseanne Barr used to: voice, snarl, and all.
And this bimbo was getting into that speech last night. I honestly think she BELIEVES that she could take on ANYBODY in a debate and win, and she's ITCHIN' to debate!

Waitin' for the smackdown......

That disgusts me on so many levels, I can't even begin...

This is an excellent post, and I'd recommend everyone read the entire piece.

That job was NOT in any way controversial - and it shows that he cared. My question is could this alienate Catholics - in places like Ohio - enough to push them not to vote on abortion alone.

15. Solid.

Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed.

- Barry Goldwater

48. A bit of advice for the Palin Convert:
DON'T change your voter registration at this late date. Party affiliation means nothing going into the GE - you can vote for Obama and be registered Republican.

But a last minute change of registration is a good way to LOSE your registration and invalidate your vote - those are the people on the voter rolls whose registrations will be challenged - those are the people who will wind up with provisional ballots which will NOT be counted.

Wait till AFTER the election. THEN change your registration, so you can give it a test run during the next primary, and give you plenty of time to get it straight before the NEXT election.

63. Count my neighbors across the street as Palin converts as well.
They're lifelong independents who don't go in for party politics. They were disgusted by the selection of Palin, and told me: "That's it. We're off the fence. Obama gets our votes".

Palin will energize the religious-right base that was feeling so uninspired about McCain, but she will alienate thinking people like my neighbors.

64. She probably lost 70% of thoughtfull
independent voters.

What's the difference between a Hockey Mom & a Pit Bull?... LIPSTICK?

Are you kidding me?

America has seen two women who are locked into their positions, tough as nails, but are un-compromising & un-adjustable. Condi Rice & Christie Todd Whitman. Both have done incalucuable damage to America & I have no doubt this lady would be worse.

65. This lack of respect for your political opponents,
"This lack of respect for your political opponents, this denial of basic human rights to those who oppose us, this complete emptiness of policy - it ends. Right here, right now."

This says it all about the differences of the Partys, and I agreee that it ends now, enough!

66. I, too, was sickened by Palin and those who spoke before her.
I was a Republican. I voted for Reagan in 1980 but abandoned the party in 1984 for the Libertarians (:eyes:). I never voted for a Dem for President of the US until Clinton.

Palin's hateful diatribes were sickening, but I was more appalled by the orgasmic support she was getting from the old guard of the GOP.

They only want the power. They have no other goal. It's sad.

I can't imagine the sort of "compassion" she'd dispense from an executive position. :puke:

71. Awesome
Reflects what I heard on the music radio this morning. Non-political soul r&b station. Caller said she supported Hillary and had been leaning toward McCain, but when she realized he thought all women were interchangable, she decided to vote Dem. She said Palin's speech made her realize we have to get out and support the Democrats.

83. You all don't see the plan here
Nominate a right-wing-nut woman for VP you KNOW has a ton of baggage

Have her quit eventually in an emotional (tears and/or anger, doesn't matter which) press conference where she blames the EEEEEEVEEEL LEEEEEEEBERAL MEEEEEEEEEDIA

This EXCITES THE BASE beyond belief

This gets a lot of the "leaners" to move over to McCain because they feel bad of "how she was treated" (Americans, a lot of us here included, are all suckers for a "victim story")

Anyone who says "HE PLANNED THIS ALL ALONG" sounds paranoid

WHY else would he nominate her???? If he wanted a conservative woman, and "executive experience" was a more important criteria to him than "government experience", why not Whitman (e-bay) or Fiona (HP)?????????????????????

The Republicans are NOT stupid. Dear God don't EVER think they're stupid. Comfort yourself with that idea and WE'RE DONE

94. The "Harriet Myers" theory of removal
Wow. It really takes conspiracy theory pretty far out there. LOL. But, hey, I like conspiracy theories.

But, as to the original post, I thought the speech was a total turn off....delivered well.

95. Cindy McCain - the new Paris Hilton ?
Is Cindy McCain related to Paris Hilton ?
Cindy is the spitting image of Ms. Hilton and Paris could
easily play the young Cindy in a movie.

The similarities do not end there either. Both Cindy and Paris
are heiresses, born with silver spoons in their mouths, live
elitist lifestyles and both have been demeaned by their men (
ie. Paris and her infamous sex tape and John McCain dismissing
Cindy as " you C*nt" some years ago.

Of course the mainstream media would never suggest that Cindy
is the Paris Hilton of the Republican Party ( but they are
all too eager to paint Michelle Obama as a dangerous, radical
black Woman).

Finally, if Cindy McCain doesn't want all her houses - why not
give some of them away to charity ?

96. I tuned in a couple of times to the Convention also and let me just say
that I couldn't get out fast enough.

There isn't enough disinfectant in the world to take away the soil and stench...the sense of being so covered in garbage that nothing would ever make me feel clean again.

That's all they have...attacks. Attack upon attack upon attack.

No real PLANS to improve this country....only attacks on Obama.

Well, what does that say to people? Where someone has no real plans but can only attack the opposition, there isn't much, if any, substance below the surface.

We know that...unfortunately, the people who fall for that tactic don't, and never will. No doubt these are people who would be glad to punch someone's lights out, see the person fall to the ground, then keep stomping and attacking while their opponent is unconscious.... because with them, it's all about the ATTACK. Violence disguised as righteousness.

Moronics disguised as parables from the Bible.

Insanity disguised as "Abstinence only" while a VP candidate couldn't keep her own child from saying "yes".

bleh.

hypocrisy sucks.
