"Country First"
Anyone else annoyed at all those "Country First" signs at the Republican Convention? Is the not so subtle, not so coded message that Republicans have some sort of special monopoly on love of Country or patriotism? Or is it some creepy sort of "Deutschland Uber Alles" overtone? I grew up in the 1960's and remember very well the "America: Love It Or Leave It" crowd, and these "Country First" placards trigger similar feelings in me and they are not warm and fuzzy feelings.

1. Yes, it's annoying, and I'm sick to damned death of the implication that only Republicans
can be patriots.

I love my country too. That's why I vote Democrat!

Obama addressed the ridiculous notion that patriotism belongs only to the Republicans in his acceptance speech last week.

2. Does that mean they put country before God?
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 12:29 PM by seasat
I would love for a reporter to ask them this and press it. It will make them squirm because they are not supposed to put anything before God. It would be an act of idolatry under the strict interpretation of the Bible that they subscribe to. Yet, they would turn off swing voters if they say that they'll put God before country because they would come across as some sort of religious wing nut. It would be a great Catch-22 question.

7. I was thinking of that too
Any of them that are religious, you would think, would feel uncomfortable with a slogan or theme like that.

3. That's why no real Christians are in the GOP anymore

They can't even remember the first commandment.

5. I think they look like real estate signs.
Countryfirst? Wasn't that some kind of corrupt mortgage broker that went out of business? :P

8. I think of it along the Deutschland Uber Alles" lines
I'm thinking, c'mon, for most people, it's family and friends first. It sounds so nazi-like to proclaim "country first" as a noble message.

10. The Obama/Biden response should be "AMERICANS first"
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:38 PM by JBoris
they have alluded to that in their response so far, but I think the response to a catch phrase, should be another catch phrase. I also think attention should be drawn to the repub's willingness to divide the country over culture wars. Who is putting this election first and the American people second? Once again the neocons are. Their doublespeak knows no bounds.
