Are most of you familiar with hockey moms?
In a way, I hate doing this post because I love the sport of hockey so much. I live in hockey country here in remote northern New York , and hockey has been my number one sport for decades. I played it on ponds as a kid, love going to hockey games, and love watching it on TV. IMO, there isn't a more exciting sport. Having said that, I will give you my view of "hockey moms", but please note that my view of them is just of the hockey moms in my area.

When someone in my area says they are a hockey mom, it generally means they are the mom of at least one BOY who plays hockey and who is somewhere between the age of a 1st grader and junior high school. With most hockey moms in my area, it's sports first, school second. I have several close friends who are teachers, and each one of them tells me that the hockey moms are by far the most neglectful parents EVER when it comes to pushing the right priorities for their kids. Most people try to balance sports and studies, but not most hockey moms around here. Some of these boys are so stressed out with hockey by the time they get to high school that they end up ultimately burning out and imploding when they're teenagers. Many of the boys literally fall asleep in classes on Mondays and other days, too, because they're so tired from the weekend's hockey games.

Not all of them, but definitely many of the hockey moms in my area are as SHALLOW as it gets (same as their husbands). Should you ever have the misfortune of getting stuck at a party with a group of hockey moms and dads similar to the ones in my area, you will come out of that party feeling like you were tortured, you will be THAT bored. Most hockey moms in my area could not carry on an intelligent conversation to save their lives. What they are good at, though, is joining in with their husbands' banter about large breasted women and laughing at blond jokes. With hockey moms up here in my area of northern NY, it is men first and women second.

The hockey moms are the first ones to always complain (really brag) how they're up at 5:30 on most weekends taking their boys to hockey games on the travel team. They all act like they deserve medals for this.

Most hockey moms push their boys to excel at hockey in the most extreme manner possible. When regular hockey isn't enough, they try to get their boys on the local travel team, they ship their boys off to expensive summer hockey camps, they practically BOOT their boys out of the house and off to Prep School as soon as their old enough, and they PRAY that their boys will eventually be talented enough to make it on an NCAA Division 1 hockey team so they don't have to pay for college. That's what they hope for anyway.

Most hockey moms in my area vote Republican, but they know and care nothing about politics.

Many of the hockey moms in my area are fairly intolerant. There is virtually no black population up here, but Native Americans in my area are often frowned upon by hockey moms and treated as a lesser class of people, at least in their conversations. I've heard them laugh more than once about the inferior hockey equipment that native Americans have because those people often can't afford some of the better hockey equipment, which is so expensive.

Now don't get me wrong. There are some hockey moms who are wonderful nurturing parents and who find a way to stress to their kids that hockey is not the ONLY important thing in their lives. Those just happen to be the hockey moms who are Democrats.

Bottom line: With this constant banter by Sarah Palin of how she's just your average hockey mom, what she's really doing is trying to connect with the more well-off, white Americans everywhere, especially the ones who always put men first and women second. She is as divisive an individual as it gets. Newt will LOVE her. With people like Palin, it is still A MAN'S WORLD with them. Believe me when I say that.

2. Oh my God...I think I love you.
You have just described my sister in law to a freaking T. They are in it (and slowly going broke here in depressed MI) to keep up with the Joneses. Here it is a status symbol. Yes, both my niece and nephew were pushed into travel teams and don't even have time to play with the cousins anymore. Yes, I have to listen to it ad nauseum. It is the only thing they can talk about it. :yourock:

20. I'm a hockey mom and I'm sick of this shit.
I'm sick of us chasing after the buzzwords and alienating the ones on our side who might happen to fall under the label. We do it to hunters, we do it to NASCAR dads, and now we're doing it to hockey moms.

I know you keep saying "in my area," but you're wanting us to read it as if all hockey moms, INCLUDING SARAH PALIN, are like this.

This hockey mom -- my kids play, and I play -- isn't going to buy it. So stop selling it.

26. As a hockey mom, I agree. "...some good, some bad, most smack dab in between."
I've seen all kinds, but I do think people are more extreme with hockey. We moved from Alabama to Michigan and my son played travel hockey both places. Yes, Alabama has hockey. Huntsville, AL is supposed to be the hockey capital of the south. I think it's because there are so many transplanted yankees. :)

23. Stereotyping here
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 02:59 PM by karynnj
In fact, from the 2004 coverage, not only did John Kerry play college level hockey (designated a Canadian sport in 2004), his daughter Vanessa played in high school. From the 2004 coverage, he returned to Boston after the last vote each week to be with his girls and there were comments that he went to most of their games. So, John Kerry was a hockey dad and Vanessa is now a doctor.

One thing to think of is how little Palin has that she uses that to define herself - there is no way that Kerry would have ever been describe as Hockey dad, Kerry - he had far too many more relevant accomplishments.

24. Your thread describes **many** of the various groups that populate Dumbfuckistan
Dumbfuckistan is a state of mind, not a place. In Dumbfuckistan, reason and critical thinking are ridiculed, not valued. Racism and bigotry abound. Intellectual success is seen as failure.

In my mind, these people should not be allowed to vote.

25. My office shares a parking lot with a hockey rink. Many of the hockey moms (and dads)
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:14 PM by grace0418
around here are so rude, selfish, and clueless, even in my limited dealings with them in the parking lot. They spoil their kids like crazy, the kids are even more rude than the parents and never seem to get any discipline. They all drive the most enormous SUVs on the road, and drive them like complete assholes. Apparently they need 4500 sq. ft. of cargo space for their one skinny kid and his hockey sticks. One dork's Hummer has the vanity plate "MASSIVE" and naturally he takes up at least two spaces every time he parks his tool-mobile. They never look where they're going, they have no qualms about blocking the only way out, they drive 50 mph through the lot, they leave garbage everywhere, and they park in handicapped and other reserved spots. If you say anything, you either get ignored or a profanity-laced reply.

One hockey mom even smashed into my car and didn't leave a note. I know it was a hockey mom because I saw her (as I was walking into my office) come barreling into the lot and park her red SUV like a complete ass right near my car. The red paint-filled dent was the perfect position to be caused by an SUV being backed out of the exact space she was in if the driver wasn't paying attention and was going too fast. Unfortunately since they all drive SUVs and several of them are red, I don't know which one to blame. Grrr...

I'm sure there are plenty of parents who are find, but the assholes stand out, and there seem to be a lot of them.

We don't talk politics at work, but when she does talk at work it's all about her son's hockey team. She's rather innocuous, but yeah...pretty vacant when it comes to important issues. Kind of provincial.
