If Michelle had been half, no a FIFTH as nasty as Palin had been....
...rhe right-wingers would not have been able to howl loud enough about what a B*TCH she is.

I haven't watched Palin's speech but from just what I've read here, in AP and Yahoo!, she sounds like the nastiest, most hateful imbecile in the damn world. Even AP's butt-kissingly glowing report of her becoming a GOP "star" unwittingly detailed how unnecessarily negative, nasty and mean-spirited her speech was. Her lack of experience seems to be matched only by her lack of class, graciousness and basic home training.

And the Republicans, who have been waiting for the slightest WHIFF of 'tude to come from Michelle for almost 2 years so that they can call her the Uppity Negress that they've been dying to, are cheering this woman on. No insult from her was too low or too stupid. If she thinks she's somehow endeared herself to anyone other than the cretinous lunatics who were already going to bat for her, I do believe she is truly, deeply and SADLY mistaken.

"I'm a Train Wreck and proud of it!!" -- Sarah 'Off the Tracks' Palin

WHY haven't we heard some of these memorable reaganisms hauled back out, and turned against the GOP?

3. I don't expect her to keep up the nastiness with any poise when it is not off a teleprompter
Like Hillary could, for example. The contrast in her sharpness, because she(or her speechwriters) tried to be so sharp and cutting here, will be evident. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few bungles as she tries to be consistently successful with attacks, which typically requires cleverness.

6. People here are notably biased
It wasn't like she screeched in on a broom and bit the head off of a baby or anything. She was extremely smartass and sarcastic and she lied through her teeth though. On the vile scale, it was about what you would expect from the GOP. She was a jerk, but not Zell Miller psycho or anything. I think it was a bad way to introduce her to the public, it makes her seem petty and sarcastic, and since nobody knows much about her, except a bunch of scandals, she now seems like a sarcastic scandal ridden jerk. She might help herself in the very short term, but in the long run she didn't do herself or McCain too many favors. She preached to the choir, for one thing. That's not going to play well with demographics that McCain would like to reach out to.

12. Plus, she's not the candidate's wife
No reason to compare her to Michelle. I would say Biden didn't attack Cindy McCain, which is the comparison to be made.

17. They both spoke
No reason to compare her to Michelle.

Hence the comparison. And it has nothing to do with "attacks" so I'm not sure what your comment is in reference to.

My OP was in reference to speaking style and since both Michelle and Sarah spoke at their respective conventions, that's why the comparison was made.

Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 02:49 AM by Number23
As I said, I'm basing it purely on what I read in the "unbiased" press, including a story about Palin from AP where you can tell that they went out their way to be positive.

If it's obvious even in a glowing news article that you came across as nasty, condescending, dishonest and divisive, it would seem to me that that's about as bad as you could possibly do.

She might help herself in the very short term, but in the long run she didn't do herself or McCain too many favors.

That very well may be true. The election is only two months away so a positive "very short run" may not be all that helpful to her and her team.

19. It isn't helpful I don't think
But it does matter who she was going for. And she was looking to fire up the Republican base tonight. So yeah, to all of us she seemed pretty awful. But if you're a RWer she did awesome. She served her purpose on that end, I just think it was the wrong way to go about it. Tomorrow, I think lots of focus will be on the speech, her delivery, how she attacked Barack and how the base loved it. But in another few days, reality will hit again and she still has to deal with her scandals and somehow be appealing enought to bring new voters to the table, through excitement or by reaching out to certain demographics. I don't think it's going to happen.

21. That's definitely true
It isn't helpful I don't think. But it does matter who she was going for.

And to that end, you're right. Her slobbering base will eat her speech up with a spoon. But this election is about who can expand the most beyond the base and to that effect, you and I agree that she has lost that battle.

Palin and McCain needed to be smart enough to go after the indies -- of which I am one -- and that they did not do. She's already catching hell for her attacks on community organizers and I think she will be castigated for even more before too much time has passed.

22. polls also don't take into account
Things like turnout. Dem registration and voter turnout this year has been awesome, the GOP has been lethargic. She might help a little in that department, but I don't really think so. I think she mainly speaks to the choir. I read some polls that say McCain has gained in Republican women this week, but Obama gained support from Hillary supporters, plus he gained overall. So if Palin only brings more Republicans to the table, that's fine, but McCain needs more than that. Especially with this being a projected big year for Dems just like in 2006. He's going to have to compete against that, plus registration and probably turnout advantages.

8. I actually thought Rudy was more hateful tonight
Palin came off as just ignorant, and clueless. Somebody who just jumped into the deep end of the pool, without first learning how to swim. Rudy was just showing off his disgust of being dropped like a trash bag by voters during the primaries.

And to all those on this board who may take exception to this, sorry, but I don't care.

26. Even Michelle stating she loved her country wasn't enough
I do recall some asshat commentator on Fox News (maybe Rove?) stating that he didn't feel that Michelle had expressed her love for her country as much as she needed to. Racism is MORE prevalent than sexism.

27. I agree--but, Michelle is to be First Lady while Sarah wants to be VP
They are different jobs. The candidates are expected to go after each other. The future First Ladies are expected to be seen and not heard--or if heard, they are expected to say only pleasant and innocuous things.

I didn't say it was fair.

The candidates are expected to go after each other.

And that's a given. But Palin didn't just go after Obama, she insulted every person who has ever served as a community organizer and anyone who has ever held the Constitution in high regard.

My personal opinion is that the average Republican is not sophisticated enough to distinguish between a female CEO or politician, and any other woman. For them, all women should be "seen and not heard." So the fact that there is such a glaring discrepancy in expectations of acceptable behavior from the Democrat woman and the Republican woman is just all so interesting.

Of course the candidates are expected to go after each other, but I find it so ironic that the Republicans have been turning over rocks and searching in caves for any dirt they can find that shows just a HINT of "sass" from Michelle, presumably so that it can be used against her husband. But when Palin throws slime and insults that McCain hasn't even touched, she hears nothing but resounding applause from the same folks that would hang Michelle up by her coiffured hair.
