39. I agree. VERY effective in showing the entire world
1 - How full of herself she is.
2 - How incredibly vicious, arrogant, hateful and full of hubris she is.
3 - How sophomoric her speaking skills are.
4 - How much she resembles the alien in the movie of the same name, with that RIDICULOUS pointy-headed hairdo from hell.

Why do you like her so much? Just curious.

I found it rehashed rhetoric that will fire up the red-meat base, but Independents all over the country might be put off by the snark and sarcasm. Why do you think she was that good? Please, do tell.

Her voice was VERY annoying....very Miss Beauty pageant trying to impress the judges. Literally NOTHING of substance...

I also thought some of the "red meat" stuff came of very insulting to most Americans, such as the "being mayor is like community organizer except with real responsibilities." Anybody been a Girl Scout Leader? I have....is taking 22 eleven year old girls camping for the weekend "responsibility?" Is it worthless?

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 11:33 PM by chiefofclarinet
I'm right now reading the transcript. The speech itself is awful. I can't imagine how much worse it can be, but apparently her saying it makes it exponentially more horrific.

It's shallow. The first 1/3 of the speech is talking about herself and her family. I know Biden and Obama did that too, but the authenticity of it is grossly missing. And this is the part with actual content...

It's going too far. Biden and Obama have been quite gentle with Palin. Even with a list of problems that approaches Bush, they haven't brought them up cruelly. Palin made snide comment after snide comment, demeaning Obama's and Biden's experience, while hypocritically telling about her "experience" as PTA board member and mayor. Talking about the hype that the MSM put on the Dems last week, and what Obama did in his speech, while practicing exactly what she accuses Obama of doing.

It's a pack of lies. She brings up the "bridge to nowhere," a bad idea when her record has her being for it before opposing it. She talks about her state's surplus, ignoring the huge deficit she left in Wasilia. She misquotes, misattributes, misstates, and just plain doesn't understand what Obama's platform is. And the talk of taxes... and terrorism... and drilling for oil the consumers won't see until 2012 at the earliest... At the very best, it's spin; at the very worst, it's slander.

It's the same ol' crap. The "Pee-Oh-Dubya" trash appears again, and again, and again. She "cleverly" alludes to 9/11, not only the date she ships out Track to "Ee-rack," but the attacks 7 years ago while she was a councilperson in Wasilia. She talks about Alaska's "hugh" supply of oil and gas. Well, we know where the gas comes from: her mouth. She talks about the scary "lib-urls" that want to raise taxes, but forgets to mention that it's for the "rich" in McCain's book not the middle class.

It's the wrong message. This is not a speech that will send women, minorities, and swing state voters to the polls for McCain/Palin. This gives Obama/Biden ammo, instead. Sure, this is a speech that will fire up the base. But, the Republicans forgot it wasn't the base that sent Dubya to another term; it was the independents that were scared of the war on "terra" and thought Kerry didn't have the power to stand up. And, they will lose the swing voters because of it.

It's just utter trash. As a college student, I have given better speeches than this, and I'm on track to be one of those "absent-minded professors" that have problems communicating with people. Any rhetoric and/or literature teacher could have given this speech better form, more content, and cleaned up parts where the message is lost. As a communications major in college, she had to go through some sort of speech writing classes. Why didn't she remember these now?

I can't believe that this is supposed the "second-best" person in the GOP.

All in all, this may have passed with an "athlete's C" in high school, and a D- in college. But, in the real world, this is a major league F.

76. If I was grading her like a college speaker ---- D+/C-
First, I'd knock her down a grade point for being too obvious in reading from the teleprompters. At times she would do little more than read the words phonetically.

But the real hit would come from her use of fear tactics. That's a big no-no in college classes, yet it was the crux of her entire speech. That would take her from a B to the grade I listed in the title.

Now, how does it rate for the intended audience of slack-jawed neanderthals with their cravings for raw meat? A+ She gave them everything they asked for, hatred, fear, arrogance and lies. They ate it up and asked for more.

Of course the pundits gave her an A, but then they were going to rate it that way regardless. I never heard mention of the obvious lies and distortions and only KO mentioned her arrogance. So I don't put much stock in them.

The real question will be how the American people rate it and that we just don't know as yet.

78. Depends on what your goal is
As far as a great speech...no. By no measure is it a great speech. A great speech accomplishes more than one thing. Here is what I expected her to do:

1. Fire up the base - A+
She did that and then some. But the religious right is part of the base, and mean-spirited rudeness seems to be what they want to see. WWJD? Make fun of the opposition using empty rhetoric I guess.

2. Introduce us to who she is - C
Not too many people in either party are familiar with her. Most of us on this site already knew she was a PTA hockey-mom. Now everyone knows (and knows and knows and knows...my god...we get it...and McCain was a POW too...damn it...I know). They also know a little more about her family (although, with all the potential scandals, its hard to say how much we actually learned). As for her politics we learned she is down the line Christian Conservative but we learned nothing specific about her own politics...thus this grade is lower. Which leads to...

3. Attracting undecided centrists - D-
There are probably a small amount of undecideds that liked the attack-dog nature of this speech, but I would hazard a guess that most didn't. It was vindictive, rude, arrogant, petty, and sarcastic...and if you weren't part of the choir, it would be easy for her to come across as a jerk. McCain has always wanted to change the tone in Washington, so he brings in this!!?!??! If you thought the tone was bad before wait until she brings it further into the gutter.
Also, her complete lack of specifics could not have done anything to attract centrists. They wanted to know more about her stand on the issues, and they got nothing. Admittedly, convention speeches can be pretty short on this sort of thing, but when the candidate is a complete unknown, some substance is required. Biden said that today...no mention of health care or education? Almost nothing on the economy? Sarah, there is more to running a country than demeaning your opponent.

4. Attract Hillary voters - D
There are some PUMAs that will love it, but they were inclined to love it anyway. The vast majority of undecided Hillary voters, however, got nothing from this speech. She's a woman...great...we get that. But she supports nothing that progressive women support. She offered nothing on how she helps the cause of women, except by simply being one. She is a hard-core rightie, and, as far as I'm concerned, did a great job of showing last night just how cynical her selection was. We know McCain wanted Ridge or Lieberman, but the Bush people got to him and said..."Hey, let's get a right-wing babe...the chicks will vote for her on gender alone." Most of the women I know are far too smart to fall for this, and I expect this speech may have helped in the backfiring process with left and centrist women.

So, great speech? No. And to the guy with the University of Virginia logo. Stop it. If you can actually say this speech was better than Obama's (or Michelle's) then you got into your "special plants" again. Obama's speech gave a little bit of meat to the core, while at the same time presenting a centrist message to the undecideds, and he even threw in some respect for his opponent...THAT is what makes a great speech.

79. D+/C-
Good for the base, but she already had them.
May have energized a few more voters, but probably substantially less than the number independents that were turned off.

Delivery was okay. Message was B+ to the base, but solid D for gaining independents and undecideds.

80. Compared to Giuliani's, maybe B, B-.
Compared to Biden, more in the C, C- range.

Compared to Obama? No comparison. Different ballparks. Different leagues. Different worlds.

82. Whats there to grade???

Someone wrote her a canned speech - they included points that would get the crowd to cheer - they added a bunch of EMPTY
insults - she made fun of my candidate and his running mate and my party.

I give her a BIG F (U)
