Now she's lying about Senator Obama's Senate record. She says he hasn't introduced a single piece of important legislation. Oh well, I guess she's right-- oh wait! Look! The delivery was not horrible, and she can definitely read the prompter and deliver the one-liners better than Bush or McCain. The accent got a little annoying, but that's me being small-minded so I am not going to worry about that.

What was truly amazing was just how petty, sarcastic, and downright rude she was. Sure, this was grist for the mill and the white people in the hall enjoyed it thoroughly, but, my God, for a person no one knows she certainly should at least be trying to show something like respect. She should also be trying to deliver something resembling a positive message somewhere in her speech.

I see what they were trying to do, energize the base, and where that is concerned, I think this worked. But that is because the religious right base is snarky, rude, unseemly, and disgusting. Pretty much the opposite of everything their savior allegedly told them to be.

But I think this speech will backfire in a major way. First, undecided Hillary voters could not have looked on this with any approval whatsoever. She is basically against everything they stand for and she did nothing to communicate her ability to help the women of America. In fact, aside from the incredibly repetitive drone of PTA hockey-mom, I don't see where any centrist or democratic women can relate to her at all. This speech will also backfire with centrists. They want to see who she is, and the first impression she gave them is that she is a wise-cracking, one-liner delivering, sarcastic, mean-spirited jerk. That's just great. She gave nothing to the centrists who want to know more about her politics. Instead she went from family to attack with no transition. She showed no respect for her opponents, though they have for her, and she showed no respect for those who want reasonable political discourse.

For a guy who loves to claim that he wants to change the tone in Washington, McCain may do just that. With this VP pick, he will make the tone even worse. If that was all she has to offer, can anyone call her a stateswoman with a straight face? I certainly can't. Can anyone imagine someone acting like this during a foreign policy speech? We'd be even more universally hated, if such a thing is possible.
