Educated a client today, and secured a new vote for Obama!
My business is coaching executives, most of whom are in the staffing and recruiting industry. Many of them are small mom and pop operations and they often look to me for all kinds of advice, including financial impact of their decisions, etc. Was talking with one of these smaller business owners today, and he brought up the subject of Sarah Palin. Said to me, "You must be happy that there's a woman on the ticket." Ahhh, what a great jumping off point for my wrath against the 'pug machine! Disabused him of several misconceptions under which he's been operating.... Helped him understand that the size of the state she "manages" is smaller than at least 20 of the cities in the states in which he does business. Helped him understand that he would not be helped by McCain's tax proposals, but much more so by Obama's. Helped him understand that Iran's missiles can't really even hit Europe, never mind the US. Helped him understand that, as a former Hillary supporter, he would be going against her wishes if he didn't vote for Obama/Biden. He finally admitted that he does really like Biden, and even if he's a little less than enthused about Obama, it does sound like he'd be making a big mistake voting for McCain.

My work with him, at least, is done!

1. I Love to Hear Stories Like This
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 07:29 PM by DarthDem
I was going through a photo album with a good friend about 15 years ago, when we had just met, and found a picture of her doing signup work with a Bush-Quayle 1992 T-shirt on. Heh. I started working on her right away, and within about a month, had done something to help foster a proud Democrat. She still is, too.

Congrats! :-) I need to do something like this during this cycle.

18. Yes! They're Really On A Roll, Aren't They?

Let's keep it going. I don't care if they're the wild card as opposed to winning the division. It's worked before. :D

6. thanks, CaliforniaPeggy!
What often frustrates me is that I get so passionate about it sometimes that I DO get a little tongue-tied. But not today! Felt great. ;)

7. I did some phonebanking in the last election for our new
Congressman, Chris Murphy. It was lots of fun, and very rewarding when he won. Felt like I might have actually contributed something!

9. Go do some phonebanking for Obama/Biden -- they need help in Ohio, particularly.
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 07:00 PM by ClarkUSA
Ohio is the most important swing state (aka. most electoral votes) where it's neck-and-neck.
They need help with those "working-class white voters" made so famous by Hillary Clinton.

You've got a gift of persuasion -- use it!

12. Since I've only done this locally, any advice on how
I can find info on who to contact to volunteer for things outside my area, like OH as you suggest? I think CT, where I live, is pretty well sewed up. My client was in VA.

21. I Second This Question

I live in PA (which I believe to be completely in the bag), but as I wait for a clearance to come through, I'm really not as busy as I could be, so I have some time. I asked local campaign people how I can help out in CO, OH, VA, or NV, but haven't gotten a call back yet. Anyone know?

10. Just mailed a packet of materials
to my arch-conservative hair stylist on the veterans issues voting records for McCain, Obama and Biden. The conversation turned to politics during my cut & color appointment on Saturday, and I tried to be as tactful as possible under the circumstances. Let her rant for awhile, then asked her how comfortable she was with McCains extremely poor voting record on veterans' bills. Her husband is did a tour of duty a few years ago in Saudi Arabia, and I know that this is something they would normally feel strongly about. She admitted that she wasn't up to speed on that, but would do some research. I just wanted to make sure she got the facts.

Keep your fingers crossed, please.
