How is Obama not ahead by 20% !?!
WTF is wrong with people that after the shit of the last week (and the last 8 years for that matter) how is McCain not at 30%?

The polls (no bullshit about the polls not accurate please) should not be this close.

It amazes me.

5. because
at least 30% of the country think that Bush is doing a good job. Add in another 10-15pts for people that will never vote for a democratic candidate, racists who wont vote for a black man and general stupidity.

There will never be more than a few % point difference between the two. Unless McPOW marries a goat, perhaps.

EDIT: See, for example: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6907523

The reason for white folks being "surprised" by this is that we've convinced ourselves of our own lie, to wit, that "it's only a few bad apples".

be ahead by 30 points and the GE a mere formality! DO YOU GET IT YET?!!!

14. Duh
He's just a tax-and-spend liberal muslim black power radical. If he's elected, black people will take over and just tax white people. He's going to raise my taxes and turn the US into socialism. He wants to quit the war and let the terrorists win! He thinks we deserved 9/11. Did I mention he's going to raise your taxes and spend it all on black people!!?!?!

These are all real things I have heard people say in all seriousness.

15. The corporate media is a HUGE advantage to Republicans
Not to mention the fact that the Obama campaign squandered opportunity after opportunity to define McCain during June, July and most of August. THey had the money, so there's really no excuse other than negligence.

26. The coporate media wasn't going to draw attention to McCain's numerous Gaffe's
and Phil Gramm's outrageous statements.

That was the campaign's duty and responsibility. Had they carried it out effectively, the race wouldn't be this close.

17. because people like my mom watch their convention
and say i didn't know his pow story, he is sooo courageous! and then I have to send her a long long email once again telling her ALL the things wrong with him and how he is using pow to win.

people are getting emotionally affected by this...with bush it was drink a beer have onion rings with him, with mccain its pow...all emotion.

the only way we can fight emotion is with our own emotion...i think strong messages from obama about helping people economically along with drama type music will help.

i know it sounds nuts but that seems to be how our country is won, who has the best hallmark greeting card!!

20. Think
You have grudging grim and eternally loyal hopeful GOP and MSM myth believing people as the core base for any glimmer of competitiveness. it is al under siege , vulnerable, disgruntled, out of touch with reality and under a constant barrage of reality, shock and disappointment- without Obama having to lift a finger.

What you see is slowness, stubbornness, denial and other stages on the inevitable path to electoral slaughter. And a hopeful MSM lie to keep the race "interesting".

Why not 20%? Support groups like the MSM? Faith in money, fantasy. They have much less than the Goldwater Republicans except that Goldwater had nothing in terms of fawning press, MSM props and election fraud.

At this point it becomes grimly fascinating in a predatory sort of way to see there is now nothing at all standing between truth(law, democracy, etc.) than naked fraud and a lie machine. At this point those particular crooks and liars, the little operators, should be feeling a little personal exposure and shall we say... fear?

21. Because this country is full of people who can't see past themselves.
They want to see someone elected who's "just like them" or "someone I could have a beer with."

When did we stop wanting our elected officials to be smarter than we are, especially at this level? Oh, wait, it was when we elected Shrub--or was it Reagan?

The Republicans will run a campaign that will make it hard for pro-choice people to vote for them and hard for pro-life people to vote for Democrats.

25. Hardly ANY presidential candidate ever goes below 40% of the vote
A vanilla republican running against a vanilla democrat each start out with about 40% support. You get a candidate dipping below 40% only in the rarest of circumstances -- when they are widely perceived to be completely on the wrong side of some great national issue or totally unsuited for the job.

The battle in the election is to get 11% out the remaining 20 percent. And almost certainly each side is going to get some share of that remaining 20%. That remaining 20% are the so-called swing voters. They mostly don't have a firm ideology. They mostly don't make up their minds until late in the game. They mostly don't pay much attention to politics. And they couldn't explain the issues for you in their lifetimes. They are mostly moved by gut feelings, compelling narratives, etc.

What the continuing relative closeness of this election shows is that Obama hasn't yet closed the deal mainly because the primaries left lots of voters with lots of doubts about him And the voters with the doubts are people who vote on their gut more than anything.

29. I've been making phones calls all week and there are plenty of
people who will not commit, not share whom they are voting for or have not made a decision yet. Plus there are a lot of 18 year old high school kids I know who are voting for Obama but have not been polled because they live at home with parents and have cell phones. We do not have a true count of Obama support.
