Devastating front-page article on Palin from the Globe & Mail (Toronto)

Shadow cast on McCain's judgment

September 3, 2008

Sarah Palin represents the ultimate triumph of crass political opportunism over the gravity that should have been attached to the decision of who would succeed a President John McCain, in case of his death or incapacity. Her selection reflects badly not so much on Governor Palin (more on her later), as on the man who plucked her from obscurity, Senator McCain.

That Ms. Palin is underqualified for the vice-presidency is not a point in debate. Even Republican commentators are having trouble finding attributes that make her suited to the office. Instead, they emphasize her very lack of them - as Washington outsider and hockey mom.

She is not the first lightweight candidate for an office that becomes important only in a blink of an eye or the flash of gunfire. Representative Geraldine Ferraro was chosen by a desperate Walter Mondale (himself an eminently qualified vice-president) for her novelty value. George H.W. Bush's choice of Dan Quayle in 1988 remains a mystery.

But serious people with proven records of accomplishment have also accepted vice-presidential nominations: Robert Dole, Joe Lieberman, Al Gore, George H.W. Bush, Lyndon Johnson, Dick Cheney. Hillary Clinton would have been a serious choice, just as Joe Biden is.

But Sarah Palin, with less than two years as governor of a small state, and no national experience, is not such a choice.

1. Front page, above the fold accompanied by a 5 column-wide photo of Palin.
You don't have to shuffle through the paper to find this piece.

2. Thanks for that, I didn't expect this would be front-page news.

4. I wish my newspapers were this accurate. The NY Post especially has been
shilling hard for Mccain and the GOP.

6. truly prescient!!!!
"There were better ways for Mr. McCain to shore up his base on the Republican right than with the easy National Enquirer-type storyline...."

Please, please let her last as long as Eagleton! This is the most fun -- and the happiest -- I've been in a long, long time. Coming on 8 years, now that I think of it...:applause:

8. Excellent, but the Canadians aren't voting. Of course, the only Americans who will see it will be us
Americans can't even read our own newspapers and tell you what's happening in the world, so while it's an excellent read, unfortunately it will never be read by the poor dolts who need to read it.
