If the open mic comments of Noonan and Murphy are reliable guides to the thinking of Repugnant establishment types, then we know that the repugnants elites are in an utter panic and/or are resigned to almost certain defeat. We know they will continue to put on a brave face in public, but that they don't really believe they have any chance. As excited as their yahoo "base" may be, their power-brokers and movers and shakers and consultant class don't believe they have a ghost of a chance.
But in a way it shows you how estranged McCain is, in his heart of hearts, from the party of which he is now the titular head.
McCain has decided that he really couldn't possibly win this thing, running as ANY sort of "establishment" Republican. So he made this weird out of the box choice, insulting and ticking off many establishment types who are passed over. And they all know that what he really, really WANTED to do was to choose the one time democrat Joe Leiberman, the traitor. So they know that in his heart of hearts he really want to say f*** you to the party anyway.
And Noonan is right about another thing in her open mic comments. McCain is trying to play what she calls the "bullshit narrative" card which is "not where Republicans live." But again, that just shows that McCain has decided that he has to throw away almost the entire republican play book.
So he's made a very, very desperate gamble that he can move enough people to take a second look at the utterly tarnished Republican Brand by repositioning it.
He really is rolling the dice. How can you rebrand an entire party in two short months? You can't!
We're the house this time. The odds are heavily stacked in our favor. McCain's coming into our house, putting all of his chips on the pass line, for a high risk double or nothing gamble.
But what else could he possibly do, really? Run on Bush's sorry record? Wrap his arms around the whole discredited Repugnant cabal?
