The GOP KNOWS They Will Lose, And Why They Forced Palin On McCain
The major players in the party knew McCain was going to lose this year. They also knew that along with losing the election, McCain was losing the religious right base.

What to do?

And while you're asking that, ask yourself what is their most important issue to hold onto that base?

God, Guns, and Gays.

Sarah Palin becomes the poster child in that and guarantees that the base is energized.

You know and I know when the GOP convention turns to culture wars during a time of economic uncertainty, the GOP loses. That's what happened in '92.

But they need that culture war to hold onto the religious right base and turn them out the enxt time.

Enter Sarah Palin.

Now here's something to watch for after Obama becomes president. Watch for a surprise retirement by Thomas or Scalia. That guarantees no overturning of Roe Vs. Wade for another twenty years at a minimum. That guarantees the religious right base will be there for the Republicans for at least another five presidential election cycles.

11. No, she HATES gays
You are completely wrong about her and gays. She hates 'em and only signed legislation supportive of gays because the Alaska Supreme Court FORCED her to do it.

4. Great point on 1992
But that means 2010 mid terms are going to be a nightmare (remember the Class of 94?). They only need 2 years to turn up the religious right brouhaha fervor.

Can you explain this more in depth?

9. You're right. An Obama presidency has to be showing results by year 2
Republicans love beating up on Congress. and the low popularity figures for Congress make it easy for them to do (never mind that 50% of that low opinion is owned by the congressional GOP - the day after we got a majority, everything wrong with Congress magically became the fault of the Democrats).

I think this and the OP are a good analysis. Palin will make a great martyr for them, she can go back to AK, and run again in 4 years; the GOP will say she was doomed because McCain was a RINO. We'll see more of her.

12. Ends any possibility of overturing RvW for 20 years
minimum, if just one of the four who want to overturn leaves the court.

Both are getting up there.

13. Palin is Bush but cross-gendered. Call her stupid, and it makes low-information voters identify with
her. Point out her religious fanaticism, and it just boosts their base. When she says preposterous things (and she will, oh, she will), and the MSM will tell us it is all about "who'd you rather have a beer with."

She's a moron, all right. Just like those (few?) voters who she appeals to.
