Let's imagine the absolute worst happens. McSame/Failin' get elected and then McSame dies and Failin' Palin becomes POTUS.
What does this mean? It means that we will no longer be able to refer to Bush as "Worst President Ever." By the end of her term, Failin' Palin will be the worst president ever and Dubya will be off the hook for that moniker.
During the '70s, I thought we could never see a president as bad as Nixon.
During the '80s, I thought we could never see a president as bad as Reagan, and Nixon dropped to second place on the worst-ever charts.
Then, came Dubya. Reagan fell into second place -- and Nixon is actually looking pretty good -- smart guy, would be a moderate-to-left Democrat by today's standards. He started the EPA, signed an affirmative action bill, extended the Clean Air Act, opened relations with China, had a plan or at least a desire for energy independence. He had a few corruption problems, an enemies list, and was arguably a traitor -- but Bush outdid him in all three categories, and has absolutely nothing in the plus column.
So, Reagan saved Nixon's historical bacon. Bush took the burden of "worst-ever" off of Reagan. And now, Palin could save Bush from total ignominy. We could still hate him. We could still list -- providing we had very retentive memories -- his hundreds, if not thousands, of crimes -- but in the wake of Failin' Palin, we could no longer refer to him as "worst president ever."
It's a race to the bottom for the Republicans -- and they're going at breakneck speed.
