She is firing up the base?
That is all I hear from the "liberal" media..."Palin is firing up the base." Ummm, what evidence is there that he is actully "firing up the base?" Where is the poll? Okay, perhaps she is firing up the limited group of Repubs that are for premarital sex but against abortions but I want to see evidence that she is firing up the base of the Repub party.

3. Also, the "base" was already on McCain's side anyway.
That's what a "base" is. So what good does firing them up do? Maybe the idea is that now they will volunteer for the campaign?

10. Exactly, they will definitely volunteer and vote now.
James Dobson himself wasn't that thrilled with McPain but now that Failin's on the ticket he's already said he'll be supporting them. :eyes:

16. actually, the "base" wasn't on his side
Not if you define the base as the fundies who would rather sit at home than vote for someone, even a repub, who wasn't rabidly anti-choice, pro-gun, pro-prayer in schools, pro-Iraq war.

Those folks weren't thrilled by McCain, but they are fired up by Palin.

20. that's right. Many on the right probably would not have voted. Palin has changed that.

6. I think she is. There's been a surge of excitement in the party that wasn't
there before. I heard a Rep Congressman or Senator say that now he can vote for McCain with a little enthusiasm, which was lacking before Palin's nomination.

She's given new life to the party -- as bizarre as that seems to us.

18. I'm not. I'm stating my observations and relaying a statement I heard
from a Republican Congressman, which I think is indicative of how several of them feel.

Are you questioning my motives?

7. The donations came from NRA & evangelical email pleas...
The minute they chose that turkey, the please went out to their "base" which is gun and religion fanatics who vote against their own self interests.

The "base" is just a term for the evangelical vote (which is worth money) but not enough votes to make a difference this time. Bush won because he snookered the evangelicals to believe that he was one of them and he had enough swing voters (who thought he was a regular guy), and that brought it close enough to steal. And Bush got a lot more young voters than he should because that was the time in America when it was cool for young people to be more conservative

BUT.. the repukes have miscalculated because the young voters are turning out in droves for our energized ticket, as are voters of color, and people who have never voted before.

There aren't enough religious and gun extremists or Alaskans to push them over the top to win..

14. religious and gun extremists or Alaskans

It's just religious and gun extremists. If there is one thing I've learned lately, it's Alaskans don't know who they're calling to find an 80% approval rating cause they don't like her very much...and the ones that do like her are gun and religion extremists.

9. I just got a call from my mother and she LOST what I would consider
part of the base in my sister for the GOP. My sister is so disgusted by her that she said she would at the very least stay home in November and was going to check out Obama.

13. My brother's a Repub & keeps telling me how impressed he is with Obama.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he votes for him in November.

11. "Firing up the base" this late in the game not so good. "Reaching for the middle"
is what he should be doing at this point. That's where you win. The Repub base wasn't going to vote for Obama anyway.

Besides, we finally now know what actually fires up the republican base...

It's the swing voter who I think should be very concerned.
