1. You get to do both in a single pull of a lever, so why ask idiot questions

It's not an "idiot" question, thank you... it actually very telling.

11. No, it isn't. Its a ridiculous question.
Fact is, you do both at the same time--and don't have a choice in the matter. If someone wanted to ask about motivations--or a hypothetical--it could be framed as such.

13. I'm calling the question idiotic
because you are voting against Bush as you vote for Kerry. And voting for Kerry as you vote against Bush.

Only a Naderite thinks you can vote for a person and not vote "against", as in, I am voting for Nader but not against Kerry. Its simply nonsense.

but only a Naderite would think the question makes a lick of sense. You can take that as personally as you like.

23. There are a lot of people in the ABB coalition
many of whom are not Democrats, many more that are antiwar and blame both parties for the war, but since the only way to get rid of Bush in our undemocratic electoral system is to vote for the Democratic candidate, they are doing so.

The ABB coalition will cease to exist after Election Day. So don't fool yourself into thinking that a Kerry victory is a mandate for his ideology, instead it is a massive popular rejection of the blatant fascism of the Bush/Cheney regime.

The struggle continues!

41. Arggh.
You people kill me; its exactly what we hear from Nader and others who vote against Kerry because he isn't just right. Its time you learned somethng that Bush supporters have learned, to their success. You don't vote for a mandate. You vote for a candidate. And the candidate will take your vote for whatever reason you have.

Cast your vote for Kerry, or against Bush. Its the SAME ACT.

28. Let me guess...
you also think all issues are completely black & white, there is only absolute right & wrong - there are no grey issues? That's the same crap people are upset about w/ Shrub & his posse of neo-con loons. "You're either for us or agin us."

If Kerry wins, which I don't think he will, it certainly won't be because he's somebody the country really rallied behind. It's because he really does feel like the lesser of two evils. Until the Democratic leaders really get this through their thick skulls, that's the way it will always be. There are a boat-load of Republicans out there who really don't want to vote for Bush, but just don't feel safe with a guy who keeps spouting off about his whooping 4 months in Vietnam. I'm not trashing his war record, but tell me about the heart the senate record and some details on economic, health-care & national security plans.

So the vote in November is really going to come down to the devil you know vs the devil you don't know. AKA - a vote for Bush or a vote against Bush.

44. Geez.
"you also think all issues are completely black & white, there is only absolute right & wrong - there are no grey issues? "

Of course I don't think ISSUES are black and white, or there is absolute right or wrong on ISSUES--most of them, anyway--but voting is binary. One, or zero. Left, or right. That's your choice. You can't divide it, you can't make it mean anything except that you are voting FOR Kerry and AGAINST Bush. You aren't voting on issues. You aren't voting as a symbol. You can hesitate before pulling the lever, but a hesitant vote and a qualified vote and a certain vote are all the same thing.

And that's why its a dumb question. I am sick of hearing Naderites argue that they aren't voting against Kerry. Well, they are, unless they vote for him. Its the same thing.

31. Definition of Flaming
Flaming is the act of sending someone an outrageously insulting message, whether by private email or in a public Usenet posting, usually because you disagree with something they have said. A good flame mixes a razor sharp wit with a devastating put-down so that the other person will only make themself look silly if they dare disagree -- "The absurdity of your ideas is exceeded only by the incoherence of your remarks, beginning with..."

3. You should have an option for Both
I'm voting for Kerry with enthusiasm. I think he'll make one of the best presidents we've ever had. I'd vote for someone much less to my liking to defeat Bush, though. Maybe if Bush were running against Zell Miller I'd have a problem deciding, but not short of that. So, it's both.

10. Kerry seems like a strong candidate but
I certainly have problems with him mostly around the Iraq war. I would be more enthusiastic if he had cast a vote against giving these amoral reptiles open-ended war making powers. Oh well, who knows how that would have played out to this point? That being said I would vote for Attila the Hun if it meant freeing my country from this one-party RW domination that I consider the greatest danger to our democracy since the Civil War. Kerry seems like a good guy, strong enough to take the heat, and he has my vote.

I agree there are a lot more reasons to vote for Kerry than just the fact that he's not Bush. For one thing, the guy is intelligent. And now that we have had 4 years of someone who is not "inside the Beltway", I would like to see what it is like to have someone who actually knows something about how government works.

20. I think Kerry is a wonderful person, a kind man but
his politics are not close enough to my issues/politics to make me "love" him. Still he is a much, much better human being, plus more intelligent than Bush. Kerry has my vote. If he does VERY well during his time in office, he will get my vote again.

The Dem party has shifted too much to the center; I don't like that. I may go with another party if one pops up...AT THE RIGHT TIME--NOT NOW, and NOT during a crisis like we're having today with ultra rightwing, neo fascists like Bushco.

29. In 2000 I voted against Bush...
if Nader had been on the ballot I would of voted for him, but Gore was the only other choice available.

In 2004 I am voting for Kerry...in support of his health-care plan, in support of his Senate voting record, and in support of his leadership of Veterans for Peace. The reasons for opposing Bush are endless..it would take years to form a list, but not one conservative has given me a single reason to reward this unelected incumbent!

I think that for many of us the vote is more against Bush than for Kerry even though I'm quite enthusiastic about the chances of Kerry being a very good president. It's just that Bush is SO BAD that even if the Dem nominee was Jesus Christ, Spiderman and Muhammad Ali all rolled up into one the vote would still be more against Bush than for the nominee.

Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 08:59 PM by lizzy
I say that because I would have voted for almost any democrat who would have been chosen to run against Bush. There is absolutely no way I could have ever voted for Bush.
And obviously, nobody else running can even come close to beating Bush.
So, Kerry is my only hope of getting Bush out.
