A picture and my wife's *rant*

U.S. Republican vice-presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) (L-R) meets U.S. first lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain, wife of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain (R-AZ), in Minneapolis, Minnesota September 2, 2008.

My wife emailed me:
They were talking about Palin on the News this morning and they showed a quaint picture of her sitting in a living room just with Cindy and the First Lady. No men were in the picture. Okay what is wrong with even the thought of this picture. What is she running for? VP or the Wife of a VP?
Now you may think that they are all women and it is not that big of a deal.
But that little scene did not just happen it was planned and you ask why would they have planned such a scene - maybe to put women in their place in no uncertain terms. She should not have let that happen. We should be seeing her sitting in a room with John and President Bush Senior discussing world events or strategy. Do you really think that Hillary would have let that happen. This infuriates me. It is degrading and just wrong. Even in my lowly position, I would naturally sit with the people I work with whether male or female not with the wives or husbands of those people.
Where was her husband? Playing golf with the men or consoling their Daughter after her life and tenuous relationship was smeared for the world to see? UGH UGGHH!. Now I must get to work. Maybe the adrenaline produced from my anger of this will keep me going. That little picture was really a little glue added back to that cracked glass ceiling.

1. That is one shiny green suit.

And I totally agree with your wife. This is a tea party picture. The girls all owned. The only one I still don't get is Cindy McCain the millionairess staying with a guy who calls her the C word. But I guess the ultimate fantasy (and I DO mean fantasy in her case) of being First Lady is apparently worth it all. Still, the suit is way too shiny.

it ends at her ankles! It just abruptly stops. She looks like she's wearing little pink socks.

From David Stockman to David Addington, we have witnessed in Republican circles the elevation of politics and partisan advantage over policy and principle. In that light, does this selection really surprise? McCain's decision has all the hallmarks of the GOP's politicization of the public sphere: rashness, overconfidence, an unwillingness to consider contingencies and tradeoffs, the certainty that any bad decision can be shrewdly spun as genius, the willingness to direct phony outrage toward critics, the pathetic kowtowing to the nut job wing of the party, and a general disregard for the stewardship of the country or its policies.

9. Your wife is absolutely right. Palin's a puppet, a greedy, ambitious one albeit,
but she doesn't know any better to not be seen in such a picture. Besides, it's her Dominionist husband who'll be calling the shots when McCain gets (removed) after they steal the election and Palin steps in as President.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 08:41 AM by underpants
There is nothing wrong with a lot of drive, she didn't get where she is by waiting for it to happen (well actually she used wedge issues in a normally sedate local race but that is another story ), but it seems that in her drive to get to this level (and red flags pop up all over the place that she was doing nothing but trying to move onto the national level) she failed to consider what this was going to do to her, her family, and her dear party.

12. I'm glad your wife pointed that out. She's exactly right.
I mean, seriously. She's been chosen to be the potential next Vice President of the United States. She SHOULD be, as you said, pictured with McCain, discussing foreign policy or domestic policy or campaign strategy. Instead, it's an afternoon with "the girls". Is Mrs. Palin adapting a Mamie Eisenhower sort of Vice Presidency?

15. Jesus, Laura looks awful!
Either she's looped to the gills (and who would blame her) or she's botoxed herself into that frozen smile that makes her look like the Joker. But I guess being married to the sock puppet of the Prince of Darkness will do that to you. As to the picture, they all look like the Stepford Wives, or Barbie Dolls. I don't see a lot of interaction between the three - they look like they're just waiting for someone to pick them up and wind them up. And is that some generic hotel room they're posed in?

Creepy on almost every level. I don't think a collection of Democratic women would look that stiff and joyless.

31. Gray is fashionable, but it is NOT Laura's color.
It makes her look hideous.

My coloring is very similar to hers, and gray is my absolute worst. Whenever I've tried to wear gray, people ask me if I'm tired.

She should wear a bright scarf or blouse with that gray pantsuit which is rather nice, actually. She should have bought it in navy or taupe instead of the fashionable gray.

Sarah implicitly equating herself with the first ladies. Pathetic.

We are being fed example after example of her naivete and inability to think on her feet when it comes to what the media and others around her do. Put this sad picture next to the horrible radio interview she did, in which she sat by giggling while the DJ called her opponent fat and a "bitch."

She does not recognize political moments, and she makes terrible choices. Just wait until she has to handle herself in world-televised political moments or across the table from Putin or Ahmadinejad.

20. The little table
None of them should be sitting at the little table from being the presumptive VP nominee to being the first lady to being Cindy McCain (btw-how much common ground do you think Cindy has with the Palin clan???). Cindy's teeth must be worn down to the nub from keeping a tight lid on it-all for John ...or for her dream of becoming first lady and having the entire White House and an almost unlimited budget to play with.

You're right. She should be sitting with 'equals' (yes, in quotation marks....). Even Condi would have been a better choice, if they insisted on her sitting with women. And you're right again - Hillary would never have let that happen.
