Anyone catch the strained applause last night ...
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 07:01 AM by SHRED
...from the old and pasty white crowd?
It was as if it was a chore for them that they dreaded.

I suspect they will get a bit livelier tonight when their oil drilling elk-skinner speaks.

1. I was streaming it, and it sounded canned.
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 07:17 AM by tekisui
To me it sounded like recorded applause. It would start the same way and end abruptly.

7. That was because the audio was horrible...
If you were watching the RNC feed you probably noticed that the audio would drop out in between speakers. Whoever they have broadcasting audio at the RNC is an a$$-clown... they've got a gate programmed with the worst threshold ever... The gate cuts out all the clapping when it isn't loud enough. And then it sounds like everything is happening in silence. Worst audio ever.

8. That explains it. It was a horrible stream, unlike the DNC's HD!

9. I know...
I was REALLY impressed by the DNC's feed. Excellent coverage... no annoying commentary, no blathering pundits... great camera angles. Fantastic audio. Very top notch...

The RNC feed on the other hand is rickety and the compression artifacts are making my head hurt. How anyone can broadcast that is beyond me.

12. I know why that threshhold is up real high. to cover up those who are leading the applause.

Every GOP event what we are noticing is Applause Leaders. These are people paid to clap and cheer on command. They usually sit in the front row they can lead standing ovations and at the back sides so they can keep an eye on things and also throw their weight around acoustically (also they are usually seated next to microphones). These are the people who also yell USA USA USA when ever there is a heckler or protester. They saved Bush from being heckled when he was speaking on that rubble heap with the bullhorn right after 911 and this convention is just as choreographed.

Someone didn't like the thin trickle start to "Lead Clapping" so they set the threshold on that audio gate high so that the sound of the first few lead clappers didn't make it through and only the sound of the large crowd finally joining in comes through. The effect can also sound like the speaker is standing up there pausing on purpose to signal applause on certain lines of speeches.

Also the GOP have never learned to run the crowd sounds in MONO.

It is amazingly annoying to be able to pick out where in the crowd all the Applause Leader Whores are sitting just by closing your eyes and listening to the stereo spectrum.

Good to see someone else who knows a little about sound.

16. I hadn't noticed the Stereo thing
Since I listen in at work and since I'm a sound designer that means that I have the convention in one ear and the program I'm working on in the other ear... Maybe I should tell my clients that their mixes are in MONO because I'm a newswhore and politics hound. :hi:

10. Cue cards
When I managed to wake up long enough to catch part of a speech, I noticed speakers stopping at weird times. This one guy said "and.....", and I'm waiting...and what? Then suddenly, applause would start.
