2. Well Duh?
Bill Maher said it best about a certain region of the country, but I won't post it here in the interest of peace.

Just believe in the plastic Jay-Zeus on your dashboard!

8. There are a lot of Kerry voters who have Southern accents
I can think of: My boss. All my co-workers. The women at the bank. My neighbors. The couple down the road who sell us eggs. All the folks in my peace groups here in Arkansas.

Can't help it if some of the freeps are Southerners, but don't think for a minute that everyone south of the Mason Dixon line is voting Repuke. They're not.

16. It's a disgusting bias of
some liberals who live other places than the south.

My mom, who was extremely liberal, had it until one day I called her on it and kept pushing. I played her Randy Nuemanns' song "Red Necks." At first she denied it. She finally admitted to it and even felt a little ashamed by her prejudice.

To my mom's credit she over came her prejudice and a couple of years later she became friends with a woman from Alabama with a very pronounced Alabamian accent. They remained close friends up until my mom's death.

10. Because they are so poor there they don't get a good education.
That is the only thing I can think of, after all a good majority are red states. I have heard some very bright ones from the south that slipped through the cracks and got educated. It is only a theory.

19. The first place in America to legalize slavery was...
...Massachusetts! Much of Boston's respectable old money was gained from the sale of rum and slaves.

William Penn, John Hancock, and Benjamin Franklin all bought and sold slaves, as did Lincoln's Pennsylvania ancestors.

In the years following the American Revolution, Rhode Island controlled between 60% and 90% of the slave trade. Two-thirds of that state's merchant ships were used to transport slaves. Brown University is named for a family of slavetraders.

There were still slaves in New Jersey as of the 1860 census.

So tell me about that connection again.

18. Why do people make stupid generalizations?
That's certainly a relevant question to ask right about now.

FWIW, I live in the Florida panhandle, probably the most conservative place in America outside Utah, and even here I have run into quite a few Democrats, including our congressman. Also knew a good many Democrats when I lived in Alabama and--gasp--Mississippi.

The notion that states are either absolutely Republican or absolutely Democratic is bogus. Worse yet, it's unnecessarily polarizing, and I think we have enough of that in this country without adding to it.
