Quote Falsely Attributed To Churchill used by Repub on Hardball
From the official Churchill center (centre):

"Conservative by the time you're 35"

"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain." There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University makes this comment: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

While trying some lame defense of Sarah Palin's AIP affiliation, he said he first voted for Carter. He the went on and attributed the FALSE quote. Repubs falsely use this one all the time and I wish Chris Matthews would have called him on it.

6. So you made me do an internet search did ya?
Well, I'm game. This is what I found. The quotation is changed but this may be what the misquoted quote came from.

Sir Winston Churchill -
- To be conservative at 20 is heartless and to be a liberal at 60 is plain idiocy.

7. But the official Churchill organization said that is wrong.
That quote has routinely been falsely attributed to Churchill. Churchill was the opposite: Conservative young, Liberal in later years.

9. The official Church hill org says your quote is mis attributed
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 07:12 PM by raebrek
not my quote. But, they also do not mention my quote. I never found your quote associated with Churchill but go figure. Some day when I have time, and the day will come, I will read all of the speeches on that site. Until then I only had the patience to read a few.

Raebrek!!!

edited to add: Yes I am just that stubborn. Ask my wife.

It's actually by Clemenceau. Here's a pretty good link.(below) I guess the repuks use Churchill because most of them never heard of Clemenceau...
