Palin a hit but not ready for prime time

''It seems to me that Senator Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign.'' So said John McCain about Barack Obama. Now, with much more credibility, Obama could say the same thing about McCain. Regardless of how he might extol Sarah Palin -- smart, attractive, zealous reformer -- she is nonetheless eminently unqualified to be president of the United States. That 3 a.m. call had better be a wrong number.

As nature abhors a vacuum, so does McCain abhor predictability. He is not just the maverick everyone says he is -- he is the ageless bad boy. The glee on his face as he introduced his running mate Friday said it all. He looked like an old guy who had just come into a nightclub with some dishy arm candy: Get a load of this! Only the ''this'' was not some ditzy woman, but a governor who handled herself with aplomb and confidence. She is a hit.

That is more than we can say for McCain who doesn't even appear awake when he is speaking in the middle of the day.

Of course he looks asleep during the day.
