My 99-year-old neighbor was an avid, rabid Hillary supporter
and she was pissed that Hillary didn't get the nomination. I check on her a few times a week (she has a full-time caretaker, still...). So I go down on Friday and offer to pick up her mail in the lobby and ask her if she watched the convention. Dorothy, her caretaker and by her accent of Jamaican descent, came rushing in all aglow singing "Obama, Obama!" We laughed and celebrated his wonderful speech, which my elderly neighbor admitted was GREAT. I asked her, "NOW does he get your vote?" She said, "I'm not sure. John McCain has chosen a WOMAN to be his running mate."
I asked her how much she knew about her and she said she didn't know much. I ran down the facts: former beauty queen, governor of Alaska for less than 2 years, mayor of a small town (the size of our town) for four years, five children, one of which is a four-month-old Down Syndrome infant. I took a breath and said, what do you think? She shrugged, "None of that disqualifies her." I said, she is virulently anti-choice. Her face lit up. "Bingo!" she said. "Now I can gladly give my vote to that wonderful speaker, Senator Obama." I guess she was playing me all along and possibly busting Dorothy's chops in the bargain. She never misses a vote. She'll be there for Obama in November. I sincerely thank Senator McCain for delivering another unity vote to the Democratic Party!

8. Thanks! I'd bottle her if I could.
She's been through so much but she still has her passion and her intellect.

2. I would hope that you or her caretaker will arrange an absentee ballot for her
With the very elderly it's not good to take a chance on leaving everything to just election day. They could be having a bad knee day, or a bad back day or a doctor's appointment.

5. She votes at the nursing home one block away from her front door.
She goes out and walks there every day. She is everybody's darling here, she will not be stopped and if her knees are bad or the wind is blowing hard that day one of us will push her in her wheel chair. She's so strong minded and sharp (a retired librarian) and determined to be as independent as possible. She refuses to miss a thing and she has taught us all that a good laugh and lots of determination will get you anything you need to be able to do what you want to do. She'll be there, believe me, she's an incredible inspiration!

6. Sorry, I made her sound much more dangerous than she really is!
Dedicated Hillary supporter is what I should have said. She misses nothing and can hold a conversation about anything. She's a great, great woman.

4. I think she was pointing out the real issue of the McCain pick
The issues are what separate her from Hillary, not her tepid resume.

7. Absolutely. She was also putting me through my paces to make sure I
had my arguments in order. That "Bingo!" was when I passed her test. She also added that being anti-choice was "the deal breaker." I love that dear girl!

13. She has said that she often wonders, "Why me?" when it comes to
living as long as she has. And she has also said that she's not giving up a moment of it until she has to.

Except for my ex-mother-in-law. But she's just a kid at 89! She's big on Obama, too!

I would be so grateful to have her wit and compassion should I live to reach her venerable age. She's a great role model.

20. Yes! Now if we can just convince my dad's 107 year old rabid Repub.
This woman is my dad's childhood physician's wife. And hates everything librul. But my dad is methodically working away. She's 107 and totally alive. Probably from never having to actually think about what politics actually does.

Good for you. I'm so proud when people make conscious decisions. I'll forgive and forget a hell of a lot when I see thinking going on.

Bob Barr is going to also make a difference. I think this is going to be the biggest landslide in US history. I hope.

And working for it, too. My dad was the same way about politics as your 107-year-old acquaintence; he ate up the most hateful memes and voted the way his (oil company) boss told him. Oh well, you get what you get--I'm lucky to have met Ms. M, though. She's hoping for a veto-proof majority in both houses, too!

Edited for "Wha--?"
I'm not sure a veto-proof majority is what we'll need when President Obama is in office!

Who is that gullible? Never mind, I don't want to know! "What does a VP do all day anyway?" He's a maverick, alright.
