At my family BBQ, no love for Mrs. Palin
Granted, I'm in the bluest county in New Jersey, but my more or less apolitical relatives were not big fans of the selection.

The women were insulted by the obvious pander, and as I described her positions (fundy, anti-choice, husband sits in on her meetings, left the town she was mayor of in debt) they soured on her even more.

So, at least in my little corner of the world, no play for Ms. Alaska.

1. None at the neighborhood gathering as well - a group of traditional Reps.
clustered together, leaving my lonely Dem self out of the loop. Then someone remembered I was High School History teacher as well as a dreaded Dem and left the group to ask this question.

"If McCain is elected, and then dies before being sworn in , will Palin be President?"

To be honest, I was not %100 percent sure, but I said "Absolutely! The whole ticket was elected!"

They did not look too happy -- these are geezer knee jerk Repubs. who are not really racist or anti-choice, but have distrusted Dems since they could vote.

They looked distressed and I had to restrain myself from going into a screed against their hero John and his new Best Friend.

Let them simmer and hopefully come to their senses.

The fact that they consulted me is amazing in its own right.

2. im in northern virginia
and ive sadly seen the opposite, all the female self declared dems have told me that they like Palin, no idea why just the fact shes female, my wife who is a lot more politically savvy and was a hilary fan though not stalker level, also likes Palin, not her politics just her story, small town mayor, hunter, mother etc not a washington insider etc. Still cant figure out what way shes gonna vote.

5. So your wife is anti-abortion, anti-environment, anti-education
and pro-war? Because that's what it would take to find anything good about Sarah Palin.

8. "can't figure out what way she's gonna vote"
That's what you said. If that's true, your wife is an idiot if she disagrees with Palin's politics but still can't figure out how to vote. Luckily I don't think it's true. So whatever. :eyes:

13. I think there is an initial knee-jerk of charisma and likability
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 05:35 PM by davepc
I don't think that's something to dismiss out of hand.

but theres something wierd happening in my circles, i feel she is underqualified but i think she could be a different proposition in a few years, kinda reminds me of thatcher when she first came to power, hard to place ones finger on it.

23. She'll be a Nixon to Eisenhower
if one doesn't get the reference: during the 1960 campaign Eisenhower was asked if he could mention one policy decision his then vice-president Richard Nixon had a hand in.

Eisenhower responded : Well, if you give me a week maybe I can think of one.

21. I think there is an initial knee-jerk
to try to get people to believe what the right wing wants us to believe. I wonder how many people believe Teresa Heinz is a snobbish nut who wouldn't know her if she walked right by them.

27. I can't dismiss the idea that some one who's not as politically active as the average DU member
might like her on 1st impression.

The job is to remove that impression with facts.

28. "can't figure out what way she's gonna vote"
We aren't talking about someone who thought, well who's this new person, what is she about. The poster is talking about an actual vote. It's like the media trying to pretend there are all these Hillary voters out there who are really supporting McCain. No. There. Aren't. And no half-way thinking person who supports Democrats is suddenly going to consider voting for McCain because of Sarah Palin. Like I said, I just don't believe all these stupid wife tales that are on DU today.

25. and your wife is against all forms of birth control and hates animals?
I hope your wife has an open mind, because she will not like what she sees if she really looks at Palin. Palin opposes ALL birth control, including for married couples. And she sued the govt for giving Polar Bears protection, and she created a bounty to get even more people to hunt down wolves from airplanes and helecopters.

And I'm sure when everybody hears her views, particularly that she won't protect the polar bears, she'll lose any consideration she might have had.

I never really have to deal with Republicans, so I'm always interested in hearing about stuff happening outside of my liberal bubble.

9. also at my family gathering
the grandmothers (one from a swing state and one from a blue state) thought she was not qualified, and also thought it was wrong to bring a 4 month old baby out on a campaign.

Also, my sister (from a swing state) and brother (from a different swing state) thought she was not qualified.

I'm totally willing to draw out more negativity towards this pick in relation to her professional actions.

26. I think we underestimate how many MEN will find her unqualified..
.. they are less swayed by the hockey mom bs they're trying to peddle. I think men will be her harshest critics (those that aren't pervs because she's a female under 50) You think a guy concerned about money and security is going to give her the leadership of the free world by electing the oldest candidate in history? One with poor health and obviously unclear mind?
