While you have your face time on CNN and other MSM channels trying to show the public you care and the Republican party is on top of
this natural disaster it's actually the Democratic mayor Ray Nagin who is getting the people safely out of harms way. Even though Haley Barbour claims "Mississippi bore the brunt of Katrina,{1}" I think it's safe to say that it was America as a whole who bore that brunt and I think those who were displaced, and still are displaced, from New Orleans would disagree.
So Candidate McCain while you spent time distracting people for preparing from the storm in Pearl, MS and scaling back the convention because you care—are you sure it's not because it was shaping up to being an abysmal failure—you stepped up and now own Hurricane Gustav. When those 15-20 foot storm surges flood New Orleans, and in all likelihood they will, you'll own that as well. Why you may ask? Here's why—because you voted against funds to improve those levees because you thought it was 'pork,' {2}, because you voted against unemployment benefits for people affected by Katrina {3} but you
did get to have your cake 3 years ago on the tarmac in Arizona while later critizing Bush on his response to Katrina. While he was helping you hold your birthday cake, did you tell him he should get his ass on that plane and go to Louisiana? Did you hop on that plane yourself to be the 'Maverick' you claim to be to get things done? No you didn't, plain and simple.
You didn't visit New Orleans until March of 2006, behind 40 other Senators but three years later you got to put your ugly mug in front of the American people asking people to take off their "Party hats," fitting since you were partying during Katrina, and put on their American hats. Well, just because you're attempting to look as though you care this time, it doesn't negate the damage your party did 3 years ago by your lack of response. In the loss of lives, you don't get a mulligan Candidate McCain and you don't get to stand on the backs of the dead to further your political aspirations.
