My wife just talked on the phone to a woman from Palin's town...
My wife's job involves taking phone orders from people around the country. She just happened to speak with a woman from Wasilla. For what it's worth, she said:

Palin is not bright but she's cunning. Her family is dysfunctional. And everyone in town knows the baby is not hers.

10. Maybe, but tell me how this nefarious plan plays out
If we talk about, so what? We're nobody. If the press picks it up, they take the lumps if it's dis-proven. It's only a real problem if the Obama-Biden ticket or their official surrogates take the bait, which is unlikely to happen. So how exactly does this "trap" work?

to fill public offices. They've got the goods on her, and could smash her anytime they like, and she knows it. So she'll do what she's told.

PALIN-tology - 45+ Problems for McCain's VP in just 35 hours
by BoBo2020
Sat Aug 30, 2008 at 06:28:59 PM PDT
(From the diaries -- kos)

<snip>

26)Like Bush and McCain, she can't admit when she's wrong.

27)She's linked to the Dominionist movement and Joel's Army.

28)The United Steelworkers have already spoken out against her.

29)She was a bad mayor who left her town's economy in tatters.

30)She supported Obama's energy plan, but suddenly these references are disappearing.

<snip>

48)There have been discussion of witness tampering and possible impeachment hearings related to charges of her abuse of power

49)MEME: Palin's selection provides a clear example of John McCain's hasty decision-making and poor judgement on important issues (like who would be best qualified to take his place if he could not complete his term).

50)She wants to destroy 1.5 MILLION ACRES of ANWR, not the 2000 acres she has lied about on the news.

51)Palin stated "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq.."

70. Obama/Biden won't touch it. The MSM will not pursue it.
But that leaves the other 98% of the media, which will look at it.

The way it plays out is this:

1) the initial reaction from women was negative -- they are LESS likely to support McCain. If this story is true, not only is she a golddigger, but she is a clear liar. This will prevent most women from warning up to her.

2) The initial reaction from Men was favorable -- MORE likely to vote for McCain. The reason is pretty obvious. She is hot, and if that old dag can figure out how to have a multi0millionaire keep him and a hottie at his side every day, well, that guy gets my vote. But when men find out she was lying about this baby, well that's just creepy. Most men will lose their enthusiasm for her because we have all met hot-looking women who are nuts, and that are big trouble. Men have instincts for this.

3) The one place she helps is the fundie vote. But if this story is true, a few of them will be troubled by that. Truth is, most of them live their lives with moral dissonance like this. The truth is rarely the same as the holier-than-thou aura. So who knows, they might close ranks around her.

But when this comes out into the open, McCain will have to disown her because there comes a time when the MSM would have to start asking questions.

It is OK for the National Enquirer to lead the way. After all, its readership is right in the middle of McCain's wheelhouse.

I imagine there are some very intense discussions going on this very minute at McCain Central. By now, they have probably confronted her and learned it is true. They are now looking at their options, all of which suck.

A) Throw her under the bus today and announce Romney as VP at the convention
B) See if the story will just go away. Try to ignore it.
C) Decide they are going all the way with Palin, which means they will have to get ultra dirty with Obama to take attention away from Palin.

Hiding her daughter's pregnancy would be entirely consistent with the nature of her religion. SHAME is one of the biggest components of how they think and behave. The whole church probably knows it, but they'll clam up like a cult.

Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 12:36 PM by D23MIURG23
The National Enquirer stands to make more money with a story full of insinuations and unproven accusations then a more honest one that puts a rumor to rest. If they pick this story up their calculus is going involve weighing what they can say and insinuate without causing a backlash and/or libel suit.

This is a publication that thrives on rumor and controversy.

This is what I have been saying. They probably held his cocaine conviction over his head to control him, and they will hold baby over HER head to control her.

In her church, her biggest fear has got to be being foundlacking in her mothering and child-rearing skills, presumably because she works outside the home instead of staying in the kitchen and tending the little ones. They would call her an ungodly woman. NOT a good submissive Christian.

14. I wonder if her daughter had a relationship with an Alaskan native?
That's if any of this story is true.

Wouldn't that explain the unusual looks of the infant, strong genes being what they are?

And about the Down's Syndrome... shouldn't we keep in mind that it will become very physically apparent as the child reaches 1 or 2 years old, so why lie about it?

I don't know what to think about it, it's smells fishy but difficult to prove unless there's a paper trail or Palin comes clean.

21. I heard her husband is half Native Eskimo so I don't think it matters.
You know I've been to Alaska a couple of times and it's the only state that doesn't have Indian Reservations except one small one on the panhandle. Some Eskimos and other Native people still live out in the bush like their ancestors. Others have culturally adapted to the modern world. They have freely intermarried with Europeans and all live together in the same neighborhoods and their children go to the same schools. I couldn't help notice the mixed race couples and their children all over the place. The last time I was there a year ago, the tour bus and tourist attraction operators were fifty percent First Nation people and they told you so. I don't think this is the issue. Let's not overlay our prejudices on these people. Doing so will alienate the voters who from what I can see are in the majority for Obama. Pick on the real issues like her Republican neo-con political ideology and abuse of power while in public office.

sorry if you got that idea. I meant the typical native features which may get mistaken for a DS baby.

Like I said, if she lied (which I hope she didn't) about Down's syndrome, this would become very apparent as the child grew older.

69. I don't know....
that's going into treacherous waters for them, isn't it? They'd be tearing apart any chances McCain has to take the White House. I imagine that could have dire consequences for the Enquirer.

82. American Media published stories about Bush and Condi's alleged affair.
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 05:38 PM by tinrobot
It was in the Globe, not the Enquirer, but it's still the same company.

I don't believe they have any loyalties other than selling papers. They go after everyone.

I didn't know that. Well, then it seems like they would want to pursue this story.

48. So what we've got here...
Is an anonymous internet post claiming to have spoken to someone who claims to have spoken with someone who claims to have second-hand knowledge of the facts.

Whew. For a second there I thought we were indulging in gossip and innuendo

51. I am a solid DUer of several years standing, not a bullshitter...
I simply reported ("for what it's worth") an actual phone conversation that I did actually just hear. Make of it what you will, but there is in fact a woman in Wasilla who just told this stuff to my wife.

54. Until now....
Why don't you hand out tampons with 'Palin for VP' printed on them, or something equally boneheaded. It would help just as much as your solid piece of 'reporting.' I only ask that you do it AWAY from the DU.

66. Thanks for policing DU....Next time I see, hear, read, or think
something that will likely interest many DUers, I'll just resist the urge to post. By the way, I could care less whether Palin gave birth to the kid; if she wants to be his mother, more power to her. But if the rumor is true, she fostered a whopping lie that will bring her and McCain down, and that's why some of us find it interesting.

57. There's one good way to put this to rest: Mono means you're tired, but
it doesn't mean you're quarranteened. If the daughter was really out for 5 months, and it really was mono, people would have seen her from time to time, even if just to go to the doctor, dentist, shopping, whatever. Mono doesn't mean you're chained to a bed 24/7. You go to christmas, birthdays, funerals, hockey championships. People still see you.

So, if the news crews start sniffing around, they'll find people who saw her with mono who will go on record about it.

But, if she was really hiding a belly and the normal swelling, then no one would have seen her leave the house for the 5 months.

And there will be people who will be willing to go on record about it. Nurses, secretaries, schoolmates of the father. That is, assuming the father is a teenage boy.....

62. I agree that she is cunning and not exceptionally bright
I live here in Anchorage, which is right next to Wasilla and did not hear of the babygate rumors until yesterday here at DU. I am a political junkie too.I guess we will see how this plays, eventually proof will emerge either way. If Fox gets wind of this and can prove the kid is hers we will never hear the end of it. I can just hear them blathering away about the crazy left and looping endlessly about how far left bloggers are trying to trash this poor woman and her kids.

Unless her daughter or the baby's father speaks out. Insurance, hospitals and doctors can't talk about patients' records.

71. She can be pressed to take a DNA test
"Why won't you and your daughter give a simple DNA sample so we can put this to rest? Do you have something to hide?"

In these small towns everybody knows what's happening. There are certainly classmates who know the truth. And the boyfriend would have shared this with many others. They can't all be in her camp or under her control.

Somebody has copies of all those pictures the State of Alaska pulled down form their website yesterday. That alone will probably expose her tangled web.

Remember, she was just announced as VP on Friday of a holiday weekend. There will be lots of phone calls with lawyers on Tuesday. Larry Flynt will probably have a $100,000 bounty for information out there by Wednesday.

Sit back and enjoy the fireworks. I'm hoping they don't can her quickly. The longer they try to protect her the worse it gets for McCain.

75. Normally the "mother" isn't standing to be VP
Obama and Biden don't have to do anything. There is lots of dialog at many different levels. If this story starts to appear in the open and the basic facts get some validation, people will start asking for the tests. Newspaper editorials could call the question. We probably won't see the Post or NYTimes out in front of it, but there could be others.

And remember there is an international press. They generally stick more to the issue-oriented news rather than the personal items, but the core issue here is McCain's judgment, so they may say something about this.

90. And she could have kept the entire story under wraps if she had not accepted the offer
to be V.P.
Now her and her entire family are splashed all over the media around the world.
How very, very sad for her children...the innocent ones in this situation.

As a so-called religious person, Palin should have been familiar with this:
Proverbs 16:18: Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
