Hurricane Gustav: A timely doctor's note
"Due to Hurricane Gustav I will not be attending the Republican National Convention." signed: __________________ (<- Insert Name Here)

In July the NRCC acknowledged their brand was mud:

Republicans hanging with Republicans just ain't cool.
During a conference call, the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman instructed candidates, campaign managers and press secretaries that given the anti-incumbent environment, it could be beneficial for House GOP candidates to distance themselves from politicians they may be serving with next year.

“These ratings are worse than we had on the eve of losing the majority,” Cole said. “Don’t be afraid to say you are disappointed in fellow Republicans… don’t hesitate to be anti-Washington, D.C.”

The NRCC chief discouraged candidates from attending the national convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, saying that spending days there would be a “waste of time,” and they would be better off campaigning.

The 2008 Republican National Convention is packed with 4 full days of star-studded speakers (well, astericks actually, representing the probable no-shows) http://www.gopconvention2008.com/schedule/service.aspx

In spite of NRCC approval, it is hard to provide an excuse that does not embarrass the party, make a laughingstock of the convention and possibly anger the base.

Hurricane Gustav has provided the perfect out. With Bush and Cheney begging off, the doors are wide open and the stampede for the exits has begun. Having nowhere to go and nothing to do, some will head to New Orleans for soul-redeeming photo ops. Cheney however, not wasting his time on fruitless efforts, will instead head to Georgia to stir shit up with Russia.

But, it wasn't Hurricane Gustav that created the ship-jumping panic and knee-jerk decisions.

It was the major storm that blew through Denver from August 25th-28th. The 2008 Democratic National Convention was a GOP natural disaster that wreaked havoc all across their weak, baseless platforms, formed on shaky foundations.

1. No Bush. No Cheney. No Ahnuld. No McSame.
And the T&A supporters won't get to see Sarah "I'm 44 And Still Really Hot, Right? Palin either.

Nobody's gonna bother showing up in St. Paul. They'll just stay home. Even the media will stay home.

2. In all honesty, anyone else as his VP
is better to look at and listen to than McCain. Well, maybe not Lieberman.

The media will head to New Orleans. I suspect a human interest story: "Dems campaign while Repubs help out in (empty) New Orleans"...starring Palin. Followed by breaking news on on the Russia/Georgia conflict.
