My mother the staunch Republican on VP pick
My 76 year old mother was absolutely, positively, outraged at the pick of Sarah Palin by McCain. She was already not crazy about McCain, now she says a lot of people she knows will not vote Republican. She is elderly and was very angry that McCain, at age 72 would not pick someone with expertise for VP. She said the VP pick was insulting to all the people of the United States.
I was astonished, but pleased.

1. Who is she going to vote for, then?
Or will she stay home?

5. She actually said NICE things about Obama
First time ever!!! about his intelligence and consideration for the people of the US by picking Biden who has so much foreign policy experience.
I think the issue of the elderly and how they feel about this VP pick has been completely ignored. They stare death in the face every day (my father died last year) and are not amused by McCain refusing to acknowledge his advanced age issues.
I don't know who she'll vote for, I am going to assume she may not vote, but if she is scared enough of Palin, she might just vote Democratic.

6. Urban/rural divide
She also, by the way, lives in a major urban area and called Palin "a country bumpkin". (Her words). There will be a urban/rural divide in this pick also.
I think we need to focus on McCain's poor judgement, lack of acknowledgement of his age, and why he didn't pick one of the many Repub women with experience, given he is 72, with a history of cancer.

14. Two important Republican women in my life
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 09:24 PM by butlerd
-My mother and mother-in-law, both staunch Republicans (but not unreachable) both told me that, between Obama's acceptance speech and McSame's VP choice of Palin, they are either leaning towards Obama or definitely planning to vote for him in November.
My mother stated that she really liked Obama encouraging fathers to be more responsibile for their families (the "Bill Cosby" moment that Matthew Rothschild of the Progressive Magazine derided in his "Point of View" daily podcast the other day) and that if McSame doesn't really offer anything really substantive to win her vote she will vote for Obama in November. She was also mystified about McSame's VP pick of Palin.
My mother-in-law liked Obama's acceptance speech and she too was mystified by his VP pick of Palin (it helps too that my father-in-law happens to be a Democrat).
So, in short, both Obama's speech and McSame's "hail mary" pick of Palin may well have sealed McSame's fate even among normally reliable REPUBLICAN voters. That being said, I think that we must continue to work as hard as ever to put Obama/Biden over the top b/c the MSM signaled loud and clear this morning, at least as far as MTP is concerned, that they are going to work equally as hard to spin Palin into a legendary "Annie-Oakley"-like figure, as well as the same kind of "maverick" and "reformer" that they mistakenly believe McSame to be (although I think it will be a LOT harder than they might think).
