Before you gag on your lunch, let me elaborate, point by point.
First - I previously posted this under a different title, and it sank like a rock. I believed this post to have some merit, but more than 100 views and not a single response tells me I was wrong. I'm OK with that, I guess, if I know where to improve.
So teach me, oh wise DUers, where did I go wrong, and what can I do to improve. All constructive criticisms, even those that hurt, will be read and appreciated. Back to the post...
1. Choosing Palin is a clear pander to the "PUMA" vote. Chances are strong that this block of voters will resent being so blatantly used, and if they can't bring themselves to vote for Obama, may at least go to a third party. As long as they don't vote McPander, it's good for the country.
2. Imagine the debate between Biden and Palin. fun stuff, eh? Not that Smokin' Joe needed any help, but instead of trying to overcome a tough VP candidate, Biden can focus his efforts on bulldogging McCain - one of the reasons he was picked as VP. Biden can all but ignore Palin (after all - where has this PTA Grad EARNED the right to debate Joe Biden?), avoid coming across as a bully, and continue scoring points for his boss, which is definitely good for the country.
3. This gives Hillary the perfect role to play in the Obama campaign - she can be the official Palin Point Guard. If Palin was supposed to be some sort of Anti-Hillary, let's not dodge that. Let's give Hillary another chance to show why 18 MILLION Americans trusted her with their votes, and why they believe that Hillary and the Democratic party, not Palin and the Repugs, are good for the country.
4. Despite the fact that Palin is a weak candidate, a pander to the Pumas, and an insult to Hillary, she still opened a door in the Republican party. Yes, the Republicans should have used this opportunity to advance a candidate with true skills, talent, experience, and gravitas, but they didn't. That sucks for them, they fumbled it big time, but have you stopped to think for a moment of what America has achieved in this election?
For the first time in the history of our country, we have a woman and an African American representing our major parties. That's a beautiful thing! It may not help the Republicans win in November (so what, lol), but it helps to pull their party out of the past, and force it, kicking and screaming, into the present. If we work hard and maintain focus, Obama WILL win in November. That in itself is good for the country, but this year, there's the chance for all Americans to win in the election, regardless of how they vote. Never again can we say that the two major parties in this country are afraid to nominate women, and that is--without a sliver of doubt to my mind, damn good or the country.
