Could it be that McCain doesn't actually want to win?
I'm starting to think that perhaps this is all theater. Get Obama in, have him try and clean up the last 8 years' mess... something something something...2012!!!

anybody have any opinions on this at all?

2. He doesn't want to win . . .
there's bad stuff coming down the pike and he doesn't want to be saddled with it or blamed for the last 8 years.
The Pukes will try again in 4 years as the party that can get us out of "Obama's mess".

Picking McSame is a throwaway - just like Dole in '96.

4. Precisely
I have been saying this to co-workers and family for several months. This is a toss the hot potato year for the Republicans. They will go through the motions but they don't want the White House until the mess is cleaned up and there is more money to loot from the taxpayers.

3. There's a Dole-ish quality to McClain.
And I had that feeling about Dole. Age was also an unspoken issue with Dole. There seems to be a lack of fire in both cases ( Dole and McCain) that suggests an ambivalence about actually having to serve. Maybe what drive there is comes from the satisfaction of being *nominated*... and enjoying all the attention that entails.

But actually taking on the responsibility of POTUS... well, let's just say that's not most other 72- year- olds' idea of a good time.

5. No, McSame wants to win more than anything...
its the repugs that dont care about winning. They are great at fucking things up and leaving it to the democrats to clean it up. Then, because the democrats have to make hard decision that arent popular with the shortsighted populace, the repugs win by making sweet sweet promises.

11. Yeah, Repub support for McCain...
...has been so lukewarm. I suspect most of them think Romney '12 is on the cards, to run as a 'fiscal legend' against a President Obama who couldn't solve all of the problems they've created in his first term.

I honestly would not be surprised if Romney is indirectly pumping funds into Obama's campaign now. He probably could've lived with being VP given that the best McCain's people can say about his health is that "most doctors" think he'll be around in four years, but I don't think that he wants to stand in line behind Palin.

6. It's certainly crossed my mind.
so, meanwhile, what? Try to entice Obama into some scandalous event, and capture it on tape? I mean, how do they make everyone go the other way after 4 years?

7. yeah it's an interesting theory
purposely select a disaster for VP to ensure your loss, exact revenge on the Republican party that f'ed you over in 2000. I think it had more to do with someone acting on impulse and with arrogance.

12. Yep!
I think he is tired and the thought of that pressure cooker job is not really that appealing. He knows he is failing from age related issues.
