Why the Palin baby story is important-- its about republican shame.
I absolutely do not think the democrats should say one freaking word about this story--leave it to the National Enquirer for all I care, but as long as its out there, it will be absolutely lethal to the McCain campaign. It hits republicans where they are most vulnerable--it shames them.

Their pure as snow with an assault rifle princess has a dirty little secret. Teenage sex. It hits them on their own wedge issues. Imagine if it came out that she had a secretly gay son--same thing. Shame.

Its why people like Larry Craig lie to everyone including themselves and loudly shout "I AM NOT GAY" while sneaking off to airport bathrooms in private.

The exposure of their own hypocrisy, and the possibility of a full blown coverup --a coverup which COULD be pulled off with a very small # of people, and you can bet the Governor has plenty of people at her fundie church to ask a favor of/pay off to keep quiet-- will further demoralize them and make them HATE McCain for bringing this shame upon them.

*WE* cannot exploit this. But it should be exposed by other means. It will kill them where they live and quite possibly open a national debate about republican hypocrisy and the lengths they will go to to keep up appearances.

The pictures have me convinced. I didn't even want to go here. But here it is, and while we'd be stupid to push it, we'd be stupider to actively try to kill its exposure.

2. Am I an elected official?
No. I'm just a guy talking about it on the internet. I'm nobody. Nobodies can talk about it.

Elected officials are a different story.

3. It's not a story. It's a rumor, and a pretty flimsy one at that.
I hope it stays right here at DU where no one in the real world will see it.

7. The photos make it a rumor with legs.
If the repub watercooler talk becomes "did you see the photos? what do you think? this is messed up" its going to absolutely kill them from within.

But the point of the post is not about the baby-- its about the HYPOCRISY and the resulting shame which will be their demise in this election.

12. This is why it's important
like I've said before it doesn't have to be a DU crusade but emails to MSNBC and CNN or heck, the National Enquirer are in order. It's not the babies fault; this shame should be owned by the Governor & being a Republican with their platform ends up being shame on the entire party (like they needed anything else).

15. exactly-- its an example of Repub insecurity and a deadly political mistake for McCain
This is a tough one. I know. I was ARDENTLY against the idea of jangling keys at the convention (I had the biggest thread on the pushback on it if anyone recalls) but this is different.

I really had to think about it. But this is different.

We don't have to do anything. We don't have to push it. We just can't kill it. If we do we only enable the Republican delusion that the inevitable fact of life that kids have sex and get pregnant sometimes is actually worth covering up. This EXACT argument would apply to covering up a gay child's orientation. Its coming from the same place.

Most links now go to "page not found"..and just a day arlier, there were there..proudly displayed for all to see..

There MUST be something shameful or suspect, for them to go to all that effort..

(Too late, AK..most of us have other ways to see articles & snag pics)

13. They will try to twist it into anything they can but the truth
but the photos will keep the question open.

BUT LETS GET TO THE POINT

what if it came out that the family had orchestrated some kind of plot to cover up the fact that their daughter was a lesbian? Its the sort of thing *we* are on the right side of the issue on because we think it shouldn't be a big deal at all. with the case at hand, we'd have openly accepted the daughter, teenage frolicking and all, and not make her hide her face in shame.

We have the moral high ground on this, do not have to lift a finger politically to ignite it, and no matter how they try and turn it around on us it will still a) upset fundies who will genuinely think this is just awful and lose respect for Palin, b) embarass regular conservatives EVEN FURTHER for not only picking a VP with no experience, but also for not vetting her when a tabloid scandal erupts the VERY FIRST DAY, making McCain look even further incompetent.

lets look at the heart of the matter-the point i'm trying to hammer home here--this is the kind of thing republicans are absolutely programmed to feel shame over. Shame over Palin's secret, and humiliation over McCain's disastrous lack of judgment selecting someone who had obviously not been vetted, only to have it blow up in their face. They got caught in their own fantasy world where teens don't have sex and people choose to be gay. Its not something they like out in the open. Shame will keep them home on November 4th.

14. Know what I find disgusting about this?
A disabled child is being touted as a badge of Palin's devotion to the RNC anti-choice platform. Every reporter I heard mention him seem to be implying that his very existence shows how far Palin will go for the GOP. The very same people who claim to value every human life appear to value THIS child's life as a symbol alone. Where is the dignity in that?

18. Indeed. The hypocrisy and the shame. I can't stress it enough.
It real tragedy is that this child has to live a lie to keep up appearances, and now has unwillingly become, like you said, a symbol for republican/fundie "values"

its hollow. it should be allowed to be exposed because it is so asinine and people should be reminded that this sort of thing happens REPEATEDLY with republicans. Larry Craig. Sarah Palin. Different scenarios, same driving force to make them live a lie- shame.

Have you ever successfully changed a Repuke's mind on an issue? Not only are the lobotomized, they wear blinders and earplugs. Unfortunately, they vote!

24. What is it then? Its unproven either way. Photographic evidence makes it believable.
It doesn't matter if I or anybody say one more word about it, the genie is out of the bottle. What would be embarrassing is if we actively tried to stuff it back in. The photos speak for themselves. Its ugly, but they only have themselves to blame.

BTW--At the VERY least, it is simply another example of McCain failing to vet her properly.

I'm thinking tactically and morally here. All we have to do is let it float out there. Its their problem, not ours, and they brought it on themselves.

Or now to be put in a position to be humiliated for those lies that were clearly orchestrated to protect their Mother's political career.

and to be so willing to drag them into an unwanted spotlight..

last week most people did not even know who she was, or care if she "had her own grandchild"..

Sarah said YES to McBlunder, and she opened Pandora's Box all by herself.

34. Someone please answer this for me.. I'm getting ready to head to the airport and don't have time to
search for the answer in all the Baby Threads: Did she not go to a hospital to give birth?

This would settle this argument once and for all. In a hospital, one has RNs and doctors and.. RECORDS.. and witnesses. I didn't even see any news articles that said what hospital she was in to birth the baby. Surely she didn't deliver at home.

38. Its true. *I* don't. The Dems shouldnt either. Its a sad story,
But if people could stop focusing on the knee-jerk reaction to the bad taste this story leaves, and get to the heart of it, there is something important there to be discussed.

The shame.

Aside from a couple of people in this thread noone really seems to be taking that seriously. IMO, it hurts the repubs on a level no attack we could throw at them ever could. It will come from within them if the story takes off. It will demoralize them and as I've said, we don't (and absolutely shouldn't) lift a finger to push it. We just can't kill it either.
